This week Liv Leigh and Armchair Binder both posted comments emphasizing Start Line issues as part of racing strategy. I agree; as Liv pointed out, a good start is pretty critical for a winning race. In fact, this was so obvious in the recent Tako Cup Challenge that MarkTwain White altered the Start rules so that skippers [...]

Hi!! Welcome to SLSaiing 2008!
The New Year’s holiday is a time to make resolutions and set new goals for the upcoming year.
I know, I know… those resolutions you made last year didn’t work out so well, but you deserve another chance, right?
Well, Starboards Yacht Club agrees with you. To prove it, as the picture on the right shows, Mark Twain [...]

Bend it like Beckersted
November 12th, 2007 · 6 Comments
On Friday afternoon Bismark Sea was awash with Tako sails as the usual suspects once again converged on the NYC start line for Friday “Last Call” Tako Races.
As usual, the group of diehard sailors was pretty impressive: Oliphant Ming, Liv Leigh, YumYum Divisidero, Jeff Abruzzo, Hpathe Boucher, Francois Jacques, AiLi Ling, Chaos Mandelbrot, and Svar Beckersted all bellied [...]

Armchair Binder wins Tako Cup 2007
November 11th, 2007 · No Comments
Under treacherous SL conditions and unstable Linden seas, Armchair Binder today prevailed over Hans Zinnemann 3:1 to take the Tako Cup 2007 by a unanimous decision of the Race Committee.
The sea conditions today often made the final match more about survival skills than racing tactics. Over the next few days we’ll be posting many of [...]

WOOT!
Pardon me, I’m excited. I had a chance to see the Friday PM Tako Races today at NYC.
Glida Pilote usually attracts a big fleet, and today was no exception.
Chaos Mandelbrot, Konradin Kappler, Francois Jacques, Glida Pilote, Glorfindel Arrow, Daizy Dovgal, Qwerty Freenote, and a new sailor, Frapp Graf, all came to test their speed, skill and [...]

Wednesdays with Mowry
November 1st, 2007 · 1 Comment
One of the things I most love about sailing is the sense of history and tradition that suffuses all aspects of the sport.
And for many here, a lot of SL sailing history began on the deck of the Mowry Bay Yacht Club & Embalming Society. Ask any sailor who’s been around the SL docks for 18 months [...]

Epi and Oli Split Friday Takos
October 27th, 2007 · No Comments
Glida Pilote is usually in charge of the Friday Tako Races at NYC. However this week, while Glida is away, this supreme responsibility fell to Jane Fossett and Oliphant Ming.
Although Glida often serves up a Friday menu of marathon courses and Force ten winds, Fossett opted for a kinder, gentler race dancecard, chosing four races on the [...]

Semifinals go to Armchair and Hans
October 13th, 2007 · No Comments
Hans Zinnemann and Armchair Binder will meet in the Tako Cup Finals this coming week (times to be announced). Armchair won his semifinal match against Francois Jacques 3-0. Hans Zinnemann won 3-1 against Svar Beckersted in a match that was a lot closer than the score indicates. Svar was DNF on one of Hans’ wins [...]

Tako Cup Quarterfinals
October 8th, 2007 · No Comments
The Tako Cup Quarterfinals are in the books. There were some very exciting racing and some interesting outcomes. Perhaps the most interesting result was Hans Zinnemann sweeping ACA-SL Cup champion Eugene Sodwind 3-0. Those who were in the ACA-SL Cup and now racing in the Tako Cup (i.e. the Automatic Qualifiers, or AQ) will probably [...]
