Translations of Wilhelm Reich's work

.
Most of Dr. Wilhelm Reich's ( 1897-1957) published books were in German during his life time. In the 1940s Reich wrote some articles in English for the first time and in 1953 wrote his first book in English. Until that time, the only German-to-English translations of Reich's books that he had authorized and approved between 1942 - 1953 were those produced by his close friend and colleague, Dr. Theodore P Wolfe (1902-1954) . (with exception of "De Biones" by 2 British translators -published in England only- that has been brought to this writers attention) Reich worked laboriously with Wolfe to make sure his English versions were correct. Unfortunately, however, Wolfe's translations of Reich's work are being systematically replaced by newer translations since 1969. To obtain the most accurate renditions of Reich's ideas in a writing style that Reich had approved of, always be sure to read the translations by Theodore Wolfe. Please do not support any enterprise engaged in making alterations to Reich's thoughts and style as found in the Wolfe translations. Accept no imitations or inferior translations. Respect Reich's wishes and intentions, and read only those German-to-English versions translated by Reich's designated translator, Theodore Wolfe. See below these specific books that were originally translated by Theodore Wolfe. These nine books are the crucial German-language books which Reich had Wolfe translate into English as the keys to understanding the evolution of his work.

You might ask: Who is Theodore P. Wolfe, M.D.? Dr. Wolfe is the person primarily responsible for rescuing Reich from the clutches of Hitler just as World War II broke out. Wolfe obtained the visa for WR to come to the U.S. He submitted a petition, signed by his intellectual associates, that sponsored Reich to come to America. He invited Reich to the USA, and he offered him a position as Professor/teacher at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Thus, Reich was allowed to leave Norway and come to America on one of the last boats out before Nazi Germany took over Norway. Both Wilhelm Reich and Theodore Wolfe became very close friends. Dr. Wolfe was the person who invited Reich up to the Rangeley, Maine area to stay with him during part of a summer. Rangeley, Maine is where Reich decided to buy 200 acres of land to build his home and establish his research lab in America. That land today is the site of the Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust Fund / Museum. Theodore Wolfe was Reich's trusted friend, and he also worked with Reich on all of the translations of his works/books from German to English in America between 1942-1953. Dr. Wolfe was editor of Reich's "International Journal for Sex-Economy and Orgone Research" 1942-1945. In his lifetime, Reich approved only of Wolfe's translations of his books to English. Wolfe was given royalties in return for his work. When Reich passed on in 1957, Wolfe's translations of Reich's work were the only English translations of his original German books in the Archives of the Museum that we know of and the only translations from German to English that were in Publication. After Reich's death, The Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust Fund (WRITF Reich's legacy through his last will) took over the control of the Archives, building, observatory, and land in Rangeley. It was all that remained of Reich's possessions. From the 1960s till early 1970s the Wolfe translations remained the only ones being published by the WRITF.

In May of 1968, a lawyer, David Blasband of NYC, made it clear to the children of Reich that very soon the second copyright (extending for another 28 years from the initial publishing of "The Function of the Orgasm" in 1942) would have to be renewed. That book had been translated by Wolfe. The copyright for other books, which Wolfe had also translated, would also have to be renewed, in due course. The lawyer also pointed out that Reich's children and Wolfe's widow, Gladys, and their daughter, would also have a legitimate right to receive royalties upon the renewals of the original copyrights. This information was shared with the WRITF trustee. In response to this knowledge, as early as 1969 the WRITF had hired new people to re-translate the German-language books that had previously been translated by Theodore Wolfe and published by Reich and the Orgone Institute. The purpose of this, some folks have been told by Reich's family members, was to avoid having to pay Wolfe's family any further royalties for the translations. Thus, more money could be saved for the WRITF. The Museum's priority now seemed to be the optimization of income, rather than adherence to the directives of Reich's last will and testament (section d. and e. -- see below).

Unfortunately, as a result of this new, money-making enterprise engaged in by the WRITF, whose primary mission, according to Reich's will, is to ensure that, "under no circumstances and under no pretext whatsoever shall any of the documents, manuscripts or diaries, found in my library, among the archives, or anywhere else be altered, omitted, destroyed, added to, or falsified in any other imaginable way", Reich's ideas, as well as the uniquely personal, stylistic expression of his thoughts are, in fact, being altered from the Wolfe versions which Reich had authorized and approved of. The new, unapproved by Reich re-translations, are so devoid of Reich's original style that a reader can fall asleep instead of getting the pure message Reich intended to convey. The decision by the WRITF to re-issue altered versions of Reich's works—is in this writers opinion, an apparent direct contravention of the explicit directives in his last will and testament and makes their behavior in this regard to appear highly dubious. It also raises doubts as to whether or not the WRITF has been acting with integrity regarding their fiduciary responsibility to discharge Reich's will within the true spirit he intended in the protection of his documents from alteration or addition to his own words. On the other hand, the WRITF has an excellent record for preserving the Buildings on the estate and protecting the equipment. Reich was most concerned with alteration of his words as his last will and testament stated. Read below and discover how Reich's words have been altered and added to in his books since his death.

This page presents some side-by-side excerpts for you to observe the kinds of differences occurring between the original, authorized translations of Reich's works performed by Theodore Wolfe, versus the newer re-translations "authorized" by the Museum, whose sole purpose, it would seem, is to eliminate the payment of royalties to Wolfe's widow and daughter. If you agree things have been altered —and we think you may find some changes quite significant— then we highly recommend you contact the museum to make your views known to them. And, of course, to be faithful to Reich himself and to get closest to the truth of what he had to offer us, read Reich in his original English, or seek out the translations he authorized his friend and colleague, Theodore Wolfe, to produce on his behalf. You have a right to get the truth. Insist on it.

"This "Talk" to the Little Man was the quiet answer to gossip and defamation. For decades, the emotional plague has tried again and again to kill orgone research (note well: not to prove it incorrect but to kill it by defamation). Orgone research carries a very heavy responsibility for human life and health. This fact justifies the publication of this "talk" as a historical document." It seemed necessary for the "man in the street" to learn what goes on in a scientific workshop and also to learn what he looks like to an experienced psychiatrist."

"You do not believe that your friend could achieve something great. Secretly, you despise yourself, even when - or particularly when you make the greatest display of your dignity; and since you despise yourself, you cannot respect him who is your friend. You can not believe that somebody who sat at the same table with you or lived in the same house with you could achieve anything great. In your proximity, Little Man, it is difficult to think. One can only think about you, not with you. For you choke any great, sweeping thought."

"This appeal to the little man was a silent response to gossip and slander. When it was written, no one could forsee that a government angency charged with the safegard of public health, in league with politicians and psychoanalytical careerists, would unleash an attack on orgone research. The decision to publish the appeal as a historical document was made in 1947, when the emotional plague conspired to kill orgone research (n.b., not to prove it unsound but to kill it by defamation). It was felt that the "common man" must learn what a scientist and pyschiatrist actually is and what he, the little man, looks like to his experienced eye. "

You don't believe that your friend could ever do anything great. You despise yourself in secret, even-no, especially - when you stand on your dignity; and since you despise yourself, you are unable to respect your friend. You can not bring yourself to believe that anyone you have sat at the same table with, or shared a house with, is capable of great achievement That is why all great men have been solitary. It is hard to think in your company, little man. One can only think about you or for your benifit, not with you, for you stifle all big, generous ideas."

As I can hardly claim the first of these qualifications, I may be allowed to say a few words about the background against which I undertook to do this translation. I followed Reich's publications for a good many years"

The primordial task of revolutionary propaganda should have been that of comprehending the inner contradictions in the worker, the fact not that the worker had a clear-cut revolutionary will which may have been covered up or "befogged," but, rather, that the revolutionary element in his psychic structure was partly underdeveloped, partly counteracted by opposite reactionary elements in his structure. The crystallizing out of the revolutionary elements in the masses is the prime task in the process of liberatiing their social structure"

"Extensive and painstaking therapeutic work on the human character has led me to the conclusion that, as a rule, we are dealing with three different layers of the biopsychic structure in the evaluation of human reactions. As I demonstrated in my book, Character-Analysis, these layers of character structure are deposits of social development, which function autonomously. On the surface layer of his personality the average man is reserved, polite, compassionate, responsible, conscienctious."

"If it were revolutionary propaganda's cardinal task "to undeceive the proletariot," this could not be done soley by appealing to their "class consciousness," nor soley constantly impresssing upon them the objective economic and political situation and certainly not by constantly exposing the frauds that had been practiced on them. The first and foremost task of revolutionary propaganda should have been to give the contradictions in the workers the most sympathetic consideration, to grasp the fact that it was not a clear revolutionary that was concealed or befogged, but that the revolutionary impulse in the psychic structure of the prolitariot was partially interfused with contrary reactionary elements. The distillation out of the revolutionary sediments of the broad masses is undoubtedly the basic task in the process of awakening their social responsibility"

Selected Writings An Introduction to Orgonomyby Wilhelm Reich
Noonday Press 1961; New York. trans Theodore P. Wolfe M.D.
By presenting this book in bits and pieces; crucial parts of some documents are omitted: i.e 4 chapters of the Oranur Report plus the Appendix are ommitted. Parts missing included Introduction and Survey - 3pages, The Integration of Visual Orgone Energy Functions - 12 pages; The Geiger-Muller effect of Cosmic Orgone Energy - 34 pages; The Orgone enrgy charged Vacuum Tubes (Vacor) - 32 pages; and the Appendix which includes technical setup of oranur experiment plus more - 12 pages. There is no mention in Selected Writings that this material is missing yet having it missing and using this information to do an experiemnt could be fatal to ones life. Why the ommission which is what Reich directed in his will to the Trustee to not have happen.
This book has a foreward included by Mary Boyd Higgins, Trustee stating parts of the WR last will that direct "1. To safeguard the truth about my life and work against distortion and slander after my death........(this makes it look like the begining of the will but it left out betwen the "1." and the "The" about 70 words including two and a half sentences.) (MBH continues to quote the will but this time skips forward to item 3. d.) : "In order to enable the future student of the PRIMORDIAL COSMIC ENERGY OCEAN, THE LIFE ENERGY discovered and developed by me, to obtain a true picture of my accomplishments, mistakes, wrong assumptions, pioneering basic trends, my private life, my childhood, etc., I hereby direct that under no circumstances and under no pretext whatsoever shall any of the documents, manuscripts or diaries, found in my library among the archives or anywhere else be altered, omitted, destroyed, added to or falsified in any other imaginable way. The tendency of man, born from fear, to "get along with his fellow man" at any price, and to hide unpleasant matters is overpoweringly strong. To guard against this trend, disastrous to historical truth, my study including the library and archives, shall be sealed right after my death by the proper legal authorities and no one shall be permitted to look into my papers until my Trustee, herinafter named, is duly appointed and qualified and takes control and custody thereof. These documents are of crucial importance to the future of newborn generations. There are many emotionally sick people who will try to damage my reputation regardless of what happens to infants, if only their personal lives would remain hidden in the darkness of a forsaken age of the Stalins and Hitlers. I therefore direct my Trustee and his successors that nothing whatsoever must be changed in any of the documents and that thay should be put away and stored for 50 years to secure their safety from destruction and falsification by anyone interested in the falsification and destruction of historical truth. " ........
Yet this book is an example of changes , omittions, editing, alterations as it was published the first time and futher in its later editions with new translations. MBH further wrote: " ....all income, profits or proceeds due me and the Trust from royalties and tools originating in my discoveries shall be devoted to the care of infants everywhere, towards legal security of infants, children and adolescents in emotional, social, parental, medical, legal, educational, professional or other distress. Part of the proceeds may be used for basic orgonomic research." she seemed to leave out the part "...." which would have said "i. The 80% of " just before "all income". That means and it is said in the will that only 20 % of monies are to be spent on administration costs. The quoting of the will seems to jump around ina random fashion. Bions. Energy vesicles representing transitional stages between non-living and living substance. They constantly form in nature by a process of disintegration of in organic and organic matter, which process it has been possible to reproduce experimentally. They are charged with orgone enrgy (q.v.), i.e., Life Energy and may develop into protozoa and bacteria.
Character Analysis. Orginally a modification of the customary psychoanalytical technique of symptom analysis, by the inclusion of the character and the character resistance into the therapeutic process. However, the discovery of the muscular armor necessitated the development of a new technique, namely vegetotherapy. The later discovery of organismic orgone energy ("bioenergy") and the concentration of atmospheric orgone energy with an orgone energy accumulator necessitated the further development of character-analytic vegetotherapy into an inclusive, biophysical orgone therapy. (see physical and psychiatric orgone therapy.)
Character , Neurotic. The character which, due to chronic bioenergetic stasis operates according to the principole of compulsive moral regulation.

Page 33
While most analysts ascribed everything to the psychic content of the neurotic symptoms, leading psychopathologists, like Jaspers, contended that psychological interpretation of meaning, and thus, psychoanalysis, were not within the realm of natural science at all. The "meaning" of the psychic attitude or action, they said, could be comprehended only in terms of philosophy, and not of natural science. (There is a near full page translator's note about patients and diagnosis at that time period but of course this is dropped from the new edition with new translators)

Selected Writings An Introduction to Orgonomyby Wilhelm Reich;

This book also includes the same forward as the one in 1961 by Mary Boyd Higgins but it includes the following addition:
"During years since 1960.... the WRITF has strived to fulfill its responsibility to protect and make effective these wishes expressed so movingly by Reich in his will. It has not been an easy task.: few have wanted to help; many have tried to take while giving nothing in return; others, the self-seeking and covetous, have bent every effort to conteract Reich's will and to destroy his Trust...."
(this is probably aimed at Eva Reich - WR's daughter- who had taken the WRITF to court to open the archives for student research and to request some of her own personal items she has placed in the archives after her fathers death while she (Eva) was the trustee - she lost against MBH in the years that followed or maybe it was something else MBH was complaining about)
In the 1973 foreward MBH continues and admitts to making changes to Reich's published work:
"The contents of this second edition are essentially unchanged aside from limited edititing, but much of it has been newly translated from the original German manuscripts and carefully checked by an orgonomic physician." (Why was this done? Wolfe had already translated the manuscripts. He was an orgonomic physician. Why do it again? Was it purely to cut out royalties to Wolfe and to children?) MBH continues: "Inasmuch as it includes the corrections and revisions Reich made in his manuscripts after the earlier translations had been published, this new "Selected Writings is now the definitive edition."
(Strange statement since Reich had already redone the previous publishings and corrections with Wolfe's translations. This just re-muddies the waters with new re-translations that were not authorixzed by Riech himself. See above how Reich and Wolfe worked long hours together to make definitive editions of his work) Yet this book also like the one in 1961 is an example of changes , omittions, editing, alterations as it was published the first time and futher in its later editions with new translations. While most analysts attached the greatest importance to the psychic content of the neurotic symptoms, leading psychopathologists, like Jaspers (cf. his Psychopathologie ), completely denied the scientific character of psychological interpretation of meaning, and hence, denied the scientific character of psychoanalysis itself. He, argued that the "meaning" of a psychic attitude or action could be grasped only "philosophically" and not scientifically.

We still also highly recommend you visit The Wilhelm Reich Museum for purchase of new books published by Reich and a new video about Reich and his work.
But please buy used Reich books with Theodore Wolfe M.D. translations from the original German to English when possible. And recycle by buying used books too.

When looking for a book to read of Reich's, be sure to seek a copy of his work that was translated by Theodore P. Wolfe M.D. or one that was originally written by Reich himself in English. Always search for used books with the "Wolfe" translation as approved by Reich. See examples:(click here)  We encourage those who correspond to the Wilhelm Reich Museum to please let them know that the original translations of Dr. Wilhelm Reich's written work that were translated into English by Wolfe and approved by Reich should be returned and published instead of the new translations made after Reich's death that changed the meaning and tone of the reading by changing the words used. As Wilhelm Reich stated himself:  "I therefore direct my Trustee and his successors that nothing whatsoever must be changed in any of the documents ......"

The following is from Dr. Wilhelm Reich's own "LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF WILHELM REICH" 1957

"d. In order to enable the future student of the PRIMORDIAL COSMIC ENERGY OCEAN, THE LIFE ENERGY discovered and developed by me, to obtain a true picture of my accomplishments, mistakes, wrong assumptions, pioneering basic trends, my private life, my childhood, etc., I hereby direct that under no circumstances and under no pretext whatsoever shall any of the documents, manuscripts or diaries, found in my library among the archives or anywhere else be altered, omitted, destroyed, added to or falsified in any other imaginable way.

There are many emotionally sick people who will try to damage my reputation regardless of what happens to infants, if only their personal lives would remain hidden in the darkness of a forsaken age of the Stalins and Hitlers.

e. I therefore direct my Trustee and his successors that nothing whatsoever must be changed in any of the documents and that thay should be put away and stored for 50 years to secure their safety from destruction and falsification by anyone interested in the falsification and destruction of historical truth. "

Changing words of Reich by having new translations is in this writer's opinion is the same as not honoring the directive given in Dr. Wilhelm Reich's last will and testament. Obviously the WR Museum has their own opinion too.
So seek out Wolfe translations via used books on the web. You will be glad you did. See examples:(click here)

The following is from Chapter Ten of Samuel Putnam's biography of Rabelais,

Rabelais' Dedication holds a double interest: for the light it sheds on his student days at Montpellier; and for the information it gives us concerning his relations with his publisher, Sébastien Gryphe: (French Printer 1492 - 1556)
"Most Illustrious Prelate, when last year, at Montpellier, I publicly explained, in the presence of a numerous auditory, the Aphorisms of Hippocrates and, afterwards, the Medical Art of Galen, I took note of certain passages with the translation of which I was not wholly satisfied. Having compared these rendering with a very old Greek manuscript, written in Ionic characters with much elegance and correctness of style, a copy of which I happened to possess, in addition to the texts in ordinary circulation, I was convinced that the translators had omitted a number of things, and that they had added other extraneous and faulty matter, having weakened at times the expression of the thought, which a good many of them had so much "turned" as, to speak more correctly, diverted from its real sense. Now if this is looked upon everywhere as a fault, it is a veritable crime in works on medicine. In these works, one little word either added or cut out, or even a sign inverted or drawn backwards, has frequently condemned to death many thousands of persons."
The above was written in 1532 A.D.
