May 12, 2008 - The past couple weeks have been rather interesting for the IGN Anime crew. Two weeks ago we celebrated "Grant Theft Auto Day." Last week was "We're So Sick We Think We're Dying" day. Fantastic. Fortunately this week is a little more mild, though we have been enjoying Defend Your Castle on the freshly-released WiiWare initiative. Hey, who says we need to be watching anime all the time? (Seriously, try the game out - it's five bucks.)

At any rate, here's the latest from our review crew. We hope you enjoy.

Glass Fleet: Volume 5
Published by Funimation
Review Excerpt: Glass Fleet may not be the most overwrought space opera in the history of Japanese animation, but it's probably a top five, top three contender for the title. The heavyweight champion, of course, is the series that Fleet takes after more than any other – Legend of the Galactic Heroes, the sprawling space-war OVA epic that once had the gall to set a single battle to the tune of Ravel's "Bolero" in its entirety. Although Glass Fleet doesn't have quite that much in the way of guts (or running time to spare), in its own way it's more than operatic enough." – David F. Smith

Nana
Published by Viz
Review Excerpt: "NANA is a sometimes silly, sometimes touching twenty-something soap opera. It's based on a manga series by Ai Yazawa, who specializes in epic shoujo-style melodrama (Paradise Kiss was her work as well), and it makes the best of the source material, focusing on the likable characters and managing to work around a slightly unwieldy plot. Yazawa's original manga, you see, is awfully long – 18 or 19 volumes at last count -- and continues to run today with no end in sight. This movie is based on the first five volumes of the series, give or take, and artfully cuts out some non-essential bits of the story to come up with a satisfying two-hour arc." – David F. Smith

The Slayers: The Complete Third Season
Published by Funimation
Review Excerpt: "Word on the street is there's another TV series worth of Slayers in the works. Some might say, do we really need a fourth one so badly? Others, however, have replied with an emphatic "yes," so apparently demand is still there. When it originally aired in 1997, Slayers Try was the third TV outing for Lina Inverse and company, and until this year it was the last. They enjoyed another curtain call or two afterward in theatrical and OVA releases, but for all intents and purposes Try put the franchise to bed. Central Park Media released the series in America first, along with the other two Slayers TV shows, and Funimation picked up the license a couple of years ago after CPM let it slip. You're seeing another review because Funimation's just re-issued the series in convenient slimline season sets, coming in at a regular price of less than $40." – David F. Smith
