The 4.3 km Bödeli Railway ran alongside Lake Thun from Därligen to Interlaken West, with an extension to Bönigen completed two years later. The quaint double-decker railway thus linked Lake Thun with Lake Brienz.
To remove the threat of competition from lake steamers, the Bödeli Railway authorities craftily planned the railway to cross the River Aare twice between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost. The bridges solved the problem of competition once and for all!
This project awakened a spirit of adventure among railway builders. More projects were planned and further railways constructed.
