Metrobus Fares

Express Buses: B30, P17, P19, W13, 5A, 11Y, 17A, 17B, 17G, 17H, 17K,17L, 17M, 18E, 18G, 18H, 18P, 29E, 29G, 29H, 29X.

Exact change: Bus drivers do not carry money. Please have your pass, transfer or exact fare ready when you board.

Children's fares: Up to two children, 4 years and younger, ride free with each adult paying full fare. Children 5 and older pay adult fares. Special discounted student farecards and passes are available for District of Columbia residents.

Reduced fares for senior citizens and persons with disabilities: Senior citizens 65 and older, persons with disabilities, and customers with a Medicare card and valid photo ID ride for half the regular fare. On Metrobus, use fare media specifically created for use by senior citizens age 65 and older and persons with disabilities to pay the reduced fare. The senior citizens and persons with disabilities fare products include SmarTrip®, $6 weekly bus pass and a $10 farecard. You can also show a valid ID to the bus operator to pay the reduced Metrobus fare.

Seniors and persons with disabilities ride free anytime on Metrobuses in Montgomery County (C2, C4, C7, C8, C9, D5, F4, F6, J1, J2, J3, J4, J5, J7, J9, K6, L7, L8, Q2, T2, Y5, Y7, Y8, Y9, Z2, Z6, Z8, Z9, Z11, Z13, Z29).

Metro will issue visitors a one-time courtesy Metro Disability ID card good for up to one month. You must present a valid transportation ID card from another transit agency along with a valid government-issued photo ID. Bring them to our Metro ID Card Office located at 600 5th Street, NW, Washington, DC. Visitors 65 years of age or older may get the senior citizen discount by showing a photo ID card including date of birth and address.

Transfers

Note: Beginning Jan. 4, 2009, Metro will not issue or accept paper transfers.

Metrobus to Metrobus: If you pay your fare with cash or tokens, ask your driver for a free transfer. It's valid for unlimited Metrobus connections (including round trips) within a two-hour period. If you pay your fare with a SmarTrip® card, you don't need to use paper transfers.

Metrorail to Metrobus: Rail-to-bus transfers are worth 90¢ off your bus fare, whether you ride a regular or express route and whether you pay with cash or a SmarTrip® card.

Bus fare with transfer:

  • Regular route using SmarTrip® 35¢
  • Regular route using cash 45¢
  • Express route using SmarTrip® $2.10
  • Express route using cash $2.20

Seniors and customers with disabilities with a Metro ID or Medicare card and valid photo ID ride free with this transfer.

Other fares and transfers: MARC Transit Link cards, MARC weekly and monthly passes, and VRE passes and tickets are valid for regular fares. Transfers from other buses are valid for full or partial fares on Metrobus.

Special fares

In Fairfax County, Virginia:

Routes 2T, 2W, 3T, 12C-D-E-F-L-M-R-S, 18R-S, 20F-W-X-Y, 24T and 28T.
Transferring to a regular Metrobus from one of these buses is free. Transferring to an Express bus costs $1.75.

In Anacostia:

75¢
Routes 94, A2, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, M8, M9, W2, W3, W6, W8, W9 and southbound B2, P1, P2, P6, U2, and 90 at stops at or south of Good Hope Road. On these buses, you must pay the full regular fare to get a transfer.

DC public school fares

School tokens in the District of Columbia are only for eligible students. Rail-to-bus transfers are free for eligible DC school students within the District of Columbia and at Silver Spring, Friendship Heights, Naylor Road, Southern Avenue, and Capitol Heights stations.

Metrobus hours of operation

Metrobus operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but service intervals vary by time of day and by weekday/weekend to best meet demand. Please consult Metrobus timetables for service details on specific routes.
