Police claim the need for speed if working under cover

Article from: The Daily Telegraph

December 16, 2008 12:00am

POLICE officers speeding without lights and sirens can avoid fines if they are on a covert operation, it was revealed yesterday.

The NSW Police Force claimed more than two thirds of officers issued with traffic fines while on duty last year were able to later get their fines dropped after a review of their circumstances.

The Daily Telegraph revealed the Office of State Revenue issued police with 1433 fines, mostly detected by fixed speed cameras, after all obvious lights-and-siren pursuits were culled.

But NSW Police yesterday said that 1063 of these officers later appealed internally to have their fines quashed, claiming they needed to speed for covert operational reasons.

A police spokesman said there were occasions when police needed to travel at high speeds without lights or sirens.

Petition: Sure, some of them may speed, but they all deserve good pay

I love it when i see a cop speeding because I just follow them. I've never been pulled over because of it but if i was I would just say "I thought my speedo must have been wrong because i was just matching your speed" Yesterday I saw one of those red cop cars nearly rearend a guy because he was speeding, he almost locked it up it braked so hard.

Maybe double speed limits everywhere so they become slightly reasonable and it wouldn't be an issue.

Use your brains, that's what the cops are doing. If they are going to an armed hold up, or a person in the process of ransacking a house - do you think they really want to alert the crook to the fact that they are on their way by blaring the sirens??? If they go quickly but quietly, more likely to catch the crook in the act -which is what you'd want if it was you who was the victim!!

"So what if they speed!!!" Steve SMITH 6:03am Well, Steve, they are breaking the law. Should they be allowed to take drugs as well?

Not all Cops are trained to drive with lights and sirens on. However, when you mother or brother or grandma etc is getting stabbed, assaulted, or dying, they are the ones who are risking their necks to get there as fast as they can (sometimes at excessive speeds), but if that was your family member in danger, I don't think you would be complaining. Cops may give you tickets or charge you for doing the wrong thing, but thats their job, get over it. Cops also save lives and make the community safer for everyone

Jolanda (6). If police aren't monitoring their speedos 24/7 then they (and possibly you) shouldnt be on the road. The speed limits in all areas have been assessed for a reason. The laws of physics aren't waived for cop cars the way the other laws appear to be. A foolish statement if ever I saw one.

If speed kills, as the asinine slogan claims, why aren't they all dead?

It's all about safety on our roads, we're told. Don't speed and you won't crash. In wholesale lots, people every day speed and survive. It's not about revenue raising, we're told, yet a look at the RTA fine system indicates a desire to have you pay up rather than go to court to challenge it and if you lose, it's a higher monetary penalty. I'm buggered if I can see the sasfety in this, or fining peple after the event. Every day I see why Australia's road toll and insurance and hospital costs are so high, with drivers tailgating, failing to indicate and jumping amber and red lights. These acts in themselves are indications of the sheer arrogance drivers have, the "f$#k you mate" that ends up with the monotonous drone each morning on TV and radio of crashes city wide. And where's the safety factor being enforced here? Nowhere, even though failing to indicate is $150 and 2 points. How many times a day do YOU lose your license, by failing to do the simplest, most basic thing in a car, by not using your indicator?

They can avoid fines with their "blue passport" there wouldnt be such a term if they didn't use it. (Police badges are mounted on a blue background)
