iPhone 3G finally unlocked by the Dev-Team!
engadget.com — Well this has been a long time coming. It seems that the iPhone Dev-Team has finally done the impossible -- they've gone and unlocked the iPhone 3G. The hack isn't out yet (the team says they're shooting for a December 31st release), but when it drops, the crew seems fairly confident it will result in freedom from carrier oppression.

- nothugo, 16 hr 34 min ago, -46/+9I know what I'm buying myself for Christmas! (Hint: 3G iPhone to replace my current 2G one)
- coadyj, 12 hr 31 min ago, -5/+20Well you still wont have an unlocked iPhone(Hint: you can only unlock 2.1 firmware or lower, new iPhones will come with the 2.2 firware so they cant be unlocked)
- kelly, 12 hr 2 min ago, -7/+7Well, most of us don't care.
- PPCG4, 11 hr 57 min ago, -2/+5... yet
- macbayboy, 11 hr 19 min ago, -0/+6The Blog post mentions baseband version 2.11.07 needed for the unlock. I used the pwnage tool to upgrade my iPhone to 2.2 and configured it to leave the baseband 2.11.07 intact. Any iPhones purchased now will be out of luck for the time being as doing the 2.2 update without the pwange tool will also update the baseband.
- aacidusX, 11 hr 1 min ago, -0/+3i just bought a 3g last week, it came with 2.1
- nicc, 10 hr 38 min ago, -0/+2@aacidusX
I bought one for my girlfriends birthday last week and it was at 2.1 as well.
- rabidbob, 10 hr 36 min ago, -4/+19Don't do it! Get a Touch HD or wait for the slew of great Android phones which will come out this year. I came this >< close to buying an iPhone this week, but I luckily woke up and realised I really didn't want to support a business model which tries to control what I want on my phone. Hell, you can't even transfer pics to other people via Bluetooth. The fact that jailbreaking is even necessary is everything that's bad with Apple.
- Taiyoryu, 8 hr 57 min ago, -3/+6In case you missed it a few weeks back, Android is coming to the iPhone eventually, now that they've got Linux on it.
- Invid, 8 hr 2 min ago, -2/+4Newsflash, they all try to control what you do with the handset unless you buy unsubsidized phones from the manufacturer. It's not like the G1 is unlocked or anything when you buy it from T-Mobile for $180. That costs ~$425.
What's wrong with emailing your photos? Bluetooth is slow.
- iPanda, 10 hr 36 min ago, -0/+2you can unlock 2.2 as long as it has been updated correctly through pwnage tools.
its not really the 2.x version that matters, its the baseband that matters: if its 2.11.07 or older your good. if not you gotta wait till the new year. - coadyj, 9 hr 56 min ago, -2/+1right, so all the 2.2 factory installed firmwares are going to have an old baseband are they, if digg reader knew any better you guys would be dugg down
- Mareshalu, 9 hr 2 min ago, -0/+2"Hint" aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaahah, ..... Meh!
- KibibyteBrain, 8 hr 44 min ago, -1/+3I don't think the iPhone 3G offers much value over the 2G at all. 3G is overrated and power users probably wont be able to even enjoy it much to the woe of the already over strained iPhone energy economy. Heck, I still carry an iPod as an iPhone owner because I'd rather not limit its battery life by listening to music on it, and that's a shame. And now AT&T ironically has made it less useful than ever to have the 3G with the free wifi access. So really to me, all you get is the real GPS, which while nice also chews down your battery life.
That said, if you are going to stick with AT&T you might as well get a new phone for your money when contract time comes along because cellphones do not age well, even something as solid as the 2G iPhone. - leetninja, 4 hr 22 min ago, -1/+3I know who doesnt care! (Hint: Me)
- coadyj, 12 hr 31 min ago, -5/+20Well you still wont have an unlocked iPhone(Hint: you can only unlock 2.1 firmware or lower, new iPhones will come with the 2.2 firware so they cant be unlocked)
- cardyology, 16 hr 32 min ago, -14/+205Screw you apple!
I paid ~£350 for your phone, I'll use whatever SIM card I damn well want!- L3W1S360, 14 hr 42 min ago, -4/+18Here, here!
- alex4u2nv, 12 hr 9 min ago, -17/+6Thats cool, because I just got my unlocked HTC G1 Dev phone. And I'm loving it ;)
- arctic, 11 hr 46 min ago, -12/+3The Googlephone is more than the iPhone. How stupid.
- AshsToAshs, 33 minutes ago, -0/+1Hey awesome!
Limmie know what you get some good apps on it!
- aristotle0dude, 12 hr 5 min ago, -11/+4Then get the SimUnlock card.
- phunlee, 11 hr 45 min ago, -10/+8Isn't £350 like $700USD? That's stupid expensive. Why would you pay that?
- chazuk, 11 hr 40 min ago, -1/+12No contract! http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paygo
- RetepNamenots, 11 hr 27 min ago, -0/+13More like $525.
- darkism, 9 hr 19 min ago, -0/+2Meanwhile those ineligible for upgrades at AT&T can pay $500 and STILL have to re-up for another 2 years.
Highway-*****-robbery.
- astrobela, 11 hr 26 min ago, -6/+13I talked to at&t customer service for an hour and 15 minutes until they fixed their network so that I can receive voicemails. Now I discovered that I don't receive calls over 3G, it only rings when it's on edge, I changed the phone at apple, I called them to give me a new phone number (at least they did it for free) and then I even went down to at&t to change my simcard and it still only rings when it's on edge. Screw you apple and at&t!! I'll do the unlock asap. Oh and yesterday this lady from at&t calls me to ask what's my problem after a combined time of more than 2 hours explaining them that IT ONLY RINGS ON EDGE in the last few days. ***** retards. Funny thing is at one one point in my longest call when they fixed the voicemail I told him if I could unlock the phone just like I could with the first gen iPhone I would have done it long time ago and he laughed. Who laughs now?? who?
- sooodvs, 6 hr 51 min ago, -0/+3That happened to me too! My phone only worked with edge and they had no idea what I meant..
- SouthsideIrish, 11 hr 12 min ago, -7/+6You mean screw ATT. Apple only gets the price of the phone, and not a cut of the monthly fee, so they could care less whether you keep ATT or not.
- Charlotte_Web, 10 hr 17 min ago, -2/+8Apple DOES get a cut of the monthly fee... that's why they slashed the price of the 3G iPhone and raised the monthly fee.
- Spawn2105, 10 hr 7 min ago, -2/+5No, acctually they do NOT get a cut of the montly fee. That was the case with the old iPhone, but not with the new 3G iPhone.
AT&T subsidises the iPhone, so they can sell each one to the consumer for less than what they pay Apple (about 200$-300$ less if i remember it correctly), but in return, they get exclusive rights to distribute the iPhone for 1 year and they get to keep the entire monthly fee.
I'd post the source but i dont have it handy, read it in a July issue of Economist - KibibyteBrain, 8 hr 41 min ago, -2/+4Apple is in a full partnership with AT&T and so even if they didn't see a cut of the fees, they share the blame. Saying they don't is like arguing that automakers share no responsibility for the environmental impact of cars because its technically the fuel that is the problem.
- astrobela, 11 hr 6 min ago, -2/+4I mean screw AT&T AND Apple because if the phone wasn't unlocked I wouldn't have had all these problems with AT&T because I wouldn't have used it with AT&T at all!
- ThatsUnpossible, 9 hr 43 min ago, -0/+2You'd have had to pay $550 without the exclusivity of AT&T.
- spargett, 8 hr 56 min ago, -2/+2Yup, as "ThatsUnpossible" said, the £350 you're complaining about is the subsidized cost of the phone (by none other than AT&T). Complaining would be justified by the 1st generation users who paid a full (non-subsidized) $499 (4GB) or $599 (8GB) and still had to use AT&T.
- Dylson, 7 hr 45 min ago, -0/+1Amen.
- kronix2, 6 hr 44 min ago, -0/+2No, spargett, the iPhone on Pay As You Go isn't subsidised. Only phones on monthly contracts are subsidised. The £350 the OP paid is the full cost of the phone, free of any operator subsidy.
- buckygrad, 2 hr 16 min ago, -0/+0In the states for new phones it will be two years before it makes sense to unlock the phone - unless you can get out of your contract. You can't purchase a new phone without a contract.
- stokd, 16 hr 24 min ago, -4/+10Not that this is a big deal to -me-, since Rogers and Fido are the only carriers in Canada I can use it on and the ETF sucks...but that's still pretty freaking awesome! Hopefully Apple won't break it with future updates....
- cramd, 11 hr 47 min ago, -1/+8Where this is good for you is if/when you head out of Canada for vacation/work. Then you can just pick up a p&T sim card and away you go. No more $600 cell bills for a few long distance calls while out of the country.
- rizzo2008, 9 hr 39 min ago, -0/+2wait I thought Apple was already selling some unlocked iPhones on foreign markets?
- pogoyoyo, 8 hr 8 min ago, -0/+2they already have with the 2.2 update... iphone dev-team says it will only work on 2.1.1
- Invid, 7 hr 51 min ago, -0/+4With this news I can finally pick up a 3G from the States, because my carrier apparently thinks I'm a bitch. "You can have a 3G, but you have to cancel your plan and re-sign....that'll be $200 (grandfathered ETF) PLUS the cost of the phone. Oh, and your new contract is 3 years with a $400 ETF."
It'll probably cost me about the same to get it from AT&T, but at least I won't be giving those ***** at Rogers any money or signing a new contract with them. Can't wait for some GSM competition in Canada. Like ***** I'll extend my contract with you *****.- TheKappa, 6 hr 21 min ago, -0/+2i hear you, man. Rogers can lick my balls.
- mwomorris, 16 hr 11 min ago, -6/+18Stupid me buying mine unlocked on eBay for way too much.
- dicer999, 16 hr ago, -1/+45Amazing work again Dev Team! Took a while but no-one minds.
- Barty, 15 hr 44 min ago, -6/+4what a great christmas treat! i'll be overseas for the holidays so this couldn't have come at a better time for me :) good job Dev Team! cheers!
- palin2012, 15 hr 27 min ago, -19/+271Buried as blog spam, why give Engadget linkage when you could link to the real thing?
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/65126957/tis-the-s ...- Michas, 14 hr 15 min ago, -43/+6At least post it right,
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/65126957/tis-the-s ...- palin2012, 12 hr 27 min ago, -1/+24Huh? both links are the same.
- xobecide, 12 hr 11 min ago, -2/+6Yeah I don't understand the difference.
- benologist, 12 hr 11 min ago, -1/+6The links look the same to me....
And Engadget looks useless as always. - BrokenVisage, 10 hr 49 min ago, -0/+4I see what you did there... I also lie sometimes.
- javiero, 10 hr 57 min ago, -17/+4lol you're a douche
- icurnvs, 10 hr 13 min ago, -4/+26Perhaps because he first heard about it from Engadget? Seems logical to me...
- teh_spazz, 9 hr 38 min ago, -3/+9Because, unlike Gizmodo, Engadget doesn't write over 500 (*****) articles a day and copy and paste directly from the site they are referencing.
- peestandingup, 9 hr 13 min ago, -3/+2Well, bandwidth for one.
- knutslie, 8 hr 11 min ago, -3/+1"the real thing"?
- My571k, 5 hr 27 min ago, -1/+2because it's down.
- cruzlee, 3 hr 34 min ago, -0/+1Engadget deserves the ***** linkage.
- Dralite, 2 hr 5 min ago, -1/+3Stop saying linkage
- Michas, 14 hr 15 min ago, -43/+6At least post it right,
- xxDriveNxx, 15 hr 22 min ago, -15/+10Congrats to the dev team, been a long time coming.
2G iPod jailbreak time? - seraph582, 14 hr 54 min ago, -9/+2PHEW!! Glad I just sold my unlocked 2G on eBay. This'll certainly drive their demand/value down.
- L3W1S360, 14 hr 41 min ago, -3/+29Long live iPhone-Dev Team! ;)
- brad016, 14 hr 15 min ago, -14/+2Oh god...Oh god...I'm just so happy....OMG!!!
- ezran, 12 hr 5 min ago, -1/+7yawn...
- egthareal, 12 hr 12 min ago, -12/+3*golf clap*
- RetepNamenots, 11 hr 27 min ago, -0/+3*tennis stomp*
- username7410, 12 hr 11 min ago, -12/+1Fapalicious.
- cerealjynx, 12 hr 9 min ago, -7/+7So, there's really no point in unlocking if my ass is allready stapled to AT&T for two years, right? Not that I could, I updated to 2.2 and re-jailbroke just a few nights ago.
- haikuFU, 11 hr 59 min ago, -5/+1Break your contract and pay the $150.
- arctic, 11 hr 50 min ago, -3/+31. Phone. $200-$300
2. Activation. $75?
3. Taxes. $150?
3. ETF. $150
Is this not expensive??? What's the plan? Loophole? - SouthsideIrish, 11 hr 15 min ago, -3/+2And you are going to use it where? Doesn't TMobile use a different frequency for 3G.
- coasterswim, 11 hr 1 min ago, -0/+5@arctic
2. Activation is $36
3. Taxes would be ~$25. - tnoy, 8 hr 12 min ago, -1/+2@SouthsideIrish
Yes, T-mobile does not use the same 3G frequency as AT&T. - vexadril, 5 hr 46 min ago, -1/+1If you say you're being deployed to Iraq, AT&T will let you out of your contract without a penalty fee. Just have your story straight and your lingo down before you call. Google is your friend here.
- zdwade, 4 hr 46 min ago, -0/+1@vexadril
at ur advice i googled what you said. it clearly states u need to show a copy of your deployment papers. so u cant jus lie to them.
- arctic, 11 hr 50 min ago, -3/+31. Phone. $200-$300
- coadyj, 11 hr 50 min ago, -4/+4well dont do it now, if you have updated to 2.2 you cant unlock, read the small print
- haikuFU, 11 hr 59 min ago, -5/+1Break your contract and pay the $150.
- jba68, 12 hr 8 min ago, -15/+2Iphone FTL.
meh - IHaveCrayons, 12 hr 6 min ago, -11/+3I'm surprised at how long it took...
- L3W1S360, 11 hr 32 min ago, -1/+2You know what they say: "Good things come to those who wait!" This is a good example. Gotta appreciate all the work the Dev Team have done to make this possible.
- CommanderEFG, 11 hr 25 min ago, -1/+3if you wanted to come out earlier you could of done it yourself
- mnemonick, 12 hr 6 min ago, -5/+13It's probably more useful to people in Europe and Asia, where all of the carriers have standardized on a set of frequencies.
For example, an unlocked iPhone 3G in the UK would work perfectly on 3-4 other networks.
In the US, it still won't work on Verizon or Sprint. It would work on T-Mobile USA but probably only in 2G mode.- haikuFU, 11 hr 58 min ago, -3/+6Have you ever compared ATT and T-mobile? ATT is terrible here in Minneapolis, and TMO rocks. Plus, after ATT screwed up my bill so many times, they are never getting another cent from me.
- Ocelot13, 11 hr 48 min ago, -1/+8thats cause ATT, TMobile, etc are gsm, verizon and sprint are cdma.
different types of networks. - Kazakaz, 11 hr 41 min ago, -1/+6You'll get better reception with two cans and a string in my area than you can get with T-Mobile. Seriously, they're right up there with Sprint for worst reception in the Western New York area.
- drewh1991, 2 hr 40 min ago, -0/+2T-mobile is awsome in the Twin Cities.
- TeflonFong, 54 minutes ago, -0/+1For 3G...living in the US sucks.
G1 unlocked won't work on AT&T 3G (US)
iPhone 3G unlocked won't work on T-mobile 3G (US)
BlackBerry Storm unlocked won't work on either T-Mobile or AT&T 3G?
- hadiz, 12 hr 4 min ago, -3/+19That's great an all, but aren't the unsubsidized phones still the price of the original iPhone at launch ($500-600)? How else would you get one at the $199 price? Sign up for a contract an immediately cancel? Don't you have to return the phone then? I don't really see the point since they are not freely sold to anyone like the 2G iPhone.
- nesagwa, 11 hr 50 min ago, -1/+5You dont return the phone, you pay a cancellation fee ($150 bucks)
- arctic, 11 hr 48 min ago, -2/+3I think it was 30 days or something and you couldn't return it.
But still the price of the phone, activation, first month bill, ETF and taxes all cost a ton. - toconnor, 11 hr 27 min ago, -1/+12You don't have to return the phone. You just have to pay the cancellation fee of $175 (-$5/month). I bought 3 iPhones with 3 lines and then cancelled 2 and eBayed them each for ~$700.
- capseaslug, 12 hr 2 min ago, -8/+30Someone at Apple just **** bricks.
- SouthsideIrish, 11 hr 13 min ago, -5/+3Why would Apple care, they don't get a cut of anything anymore.
- peestandingup, 9 hr 10 min ago, -4/+4Right, they just give away $200 iPhones for the hell of it. They def get a cut of the monthly fees.
- aschmack, 7 hr 35 min ago, -0/+6They're still getting paid the same for the phones, AT&T is taking a cut
- oo7b0nds, 39 minutes ago, -0/+1*shat
- SouthsideIrish, 11 hr 13 min ago, -5/+3Why would Apple care, they don't get a cut of anything anymore.
- JMCtg, 12 hr 2 min ago, -10/+4You hear that? That is the sound of a thousand eBayers screaming their dismay at this news.... Goodbye $600 unlocked 2G iPhone.
- arctic, 11 hr 47 min ago, -3/+4Hello again $600, it was like you never left.
The price of the phone, activation, first month bill, ETF and taxes all cost a ton. - JMCtg, 9 hr 47 min ago, -0/+2I have a feeling the bury brigade has been through here :X
- arctic, 11 hr 47 min ago, -3/+4Hello again $600, it was like you never left.
- jabberwolff, 12 hr ago, -13/+2YEAH..... but I'm getting Samsung Omina, I can do whatever the ***** I want and more now!
- jwoulf, 12 hr ago, -14/+4Hey guys, I just an entire iPhone, is this bad?
- Total90dude, 11 hr 59 min ago, -8/+2***** finally!!
- phrozen755, 11 hr 58 min ago, -7/+2WOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!
- JPamplin, 11 hr 57 min ago, -3/+29I thought Apple started requiring that you establish an AT&T contract before you could walk out of the store with it. How does that help buyers of new 3Gs?
- BraveQuail, 11 hr 23 min ago, -0/+8If you're traveling overseas. While you'll still have to pay your monthly contract, you can put in a simcard of the local country and you won't have to pay for roaming fees (that aren't included in the contract). But if you're just staying inside the country, then I don't see there being any point.
- shinew, 6 hr 30 min ago, -0/+3it doesn't, but it helps the people who already have an iphone 3g and want to use it in other countries. like me... :)
- TypeEE, 2 hr 11 min ago, -0/+2Not anymore, you can do home activation now. I believe you can pay ETF of $175 if you don't activate, so an iphone is $375
- kblackman, 11 hr 56 min ago, -9/+1You could really unlock it and use it on any carrier? Even Verizon?
- Biggbrother2, 11 hr 45 min ago, -0/+5No.. Verizon is CDMA. Different technology. You could only use it on T-Mobile USA and a handful of smaller U.S. carriers that use GSM technology, but only in 2G mode.
- kblackman, 11 hr 44 min ago, -0/+3oh weak. Ehh whatever ill probably just end up buying my way outta my verizon contract and going AT&T
- Biggbrother2, 11 hr 45 min ago, -0/+5No.. Verizon is CDMA. Different technology. You could only use it on T-Mobile USA and a handful of smaller U.S. carriers that use GSM technology, but only in 2G mode.
- PCGUY112887, 11 hr 55 min ago, -4/+10I don't know about you guys, but around here (STL area) AT&T has very fast 3G coverage and GREAT reception, especially compared to Sprint and Verizon. I understand wanting it unlocked, but why the hate against AT&T?
- meepus, 11 hr 48 min ago, -3/+8Sprint and Verizon are on CDMA, not 3G, and therefore comparing them to AT&T is irrelevant. There isn't a CDMA iPhone.
- bradthomas223, 11 hr 32 min ago, -0/+2Well here in central Louisiana AT&T's call quality leaves much to be desired (No 3g). I have had more dropped calls in the last few months than I ever had with Sprint (5 years). It is to the point that I try to end my conversations as quickly as possible to avoid the whole dropped the call and try to call people back thing. Even in the nearest 3g coverage zone 80 miles north, the 3g disconnects and is patchy. Everyone I know that has AT&T generally has the same problems.
The only reason I went with AT&T was the iphone. It is truly a remarkable device and I love everything that it can do. At this point I believe I would be unsatisfied with anything else, but the call quality sounding like I am talking in a well thing is really getting old (w/3 bars signal and Edge).
- HigherLogic, 11 hr 34 min ago, -0/+3It really depends on where you are. When I had a Blackberry, I was on T-Mobile and the coverage in my house sucked. Calls were always being dropped and I would get like one bar. Seeing as I work from home, that's kind of important. When I got an iPhone and switched to AT&T, my coverage is full bars now and I don't get dropped calls anymore. At my old house, it was the exact opposite, my T-Mobile service was great, but friends with AT&T always had low bars. I get better reception with AT&T at the lake as well, whereas T-Mobile could really only get it by the docks.
- njhardc0re, 11 hr 16 min ago, -1/+1t-mobile is the worst service out there by far. especially in the NY-NJ area
- sorepheet, 10 hr 56 min ago, -3/+8AT&T played that whole shell game with the; "we're now Cingular... surprise we're AT&T again" BS. AT&T customer service is the worst- T-Mobile is amazing. Granted cell providers coverage/quality varies depending on where someone lives. In southern Maine T-Mobile is awesome. I've had to call them a few times recently to resolve issues the lady's crackberry was having. I have an unlocked/jailbroken 2G iPhone and love dialing 611 with it to talk with a T-Mo rep. Granted I don't have visual voicemail, but I pay $5.99 a month for unlimited data and since upgrading the firmware call quality is getting better an better. T-Mobile customer support is incredible, I've never waited for longer 45 secs on hold in the 3+ yrs of service- they are kind and solution oriented. AT&T talks down to its customer base and last I checked wouldn't take a call after 9pm on a Sunday- T-Mobile is 24/7.
- decker12, 11 hr 55 min ago, -8/+2So all this time you couldn't jailbreak an iPhone 3G? News to me..
- coadyj, 11 hr 52 min ago, -1/+4unlock != jailbreak
- SgtBeavis, 11 hr 51 min ago, -1/+3This is an UNLOCK so you can use 3rd party SIM cards like T-Mobile.
- adkenc, 11 hr 51 min ago, -1/+9jailbreak. you keep using that word. i do not think it means what you think it means.
- ElectricBrain, 11 hr 51 min ago, -4/+1jailbreak != unlock
you fail - Sloi, 11 hr 50 min ago, -0/+4Jailbreaking and Unlocking an iPhone are two different things.
- robert25, 11 hr 47 min ago, -1/+45 people beat me in replying to your stupidity. Think before you speak/type/submit.
- decker12, 10 hr 47 min ago, -1/+4Please forgive me, children of men and lords of the internet. Now and forever, I vow to find the answers to all my questions before asking them.
***** douchebags.- sephiroth965, 9 hr 54 min ago, -0/+2Actually you should really try to do that as often as possible. We have this thing on the internet called google. Check it out sometime.
- coadyj, 9 hr 52 min ago, -0/+2Look at the way you phrased you question, the "news to me" comment is why you got dugg down but robert is just being rude
- SgtBeavis, 11 hr 52 min ago, -3/+6Unfortunately my iphone came with 2.2 preloaded (and the new baseband). I'm screwed until the dev team unlocks it.
Still, best wishes for a great job.- ShutItDown, 8 hr 43 min ago, -4/+1uhhh 2.2 has been jailbroken for awhile man.
- cmer, 8 hr 17 min ago, -0/+4but not unlocked.
- ShutItDown, 8 hr 43 min ago, -4/+1uhhh 2.2 has been jailbroken for awhile man.
- drhouse, 11 hr 51 min ago, -6/+1So this won't work with the latest Apple update?
- sorepheet, 10 hr 55 min ago, -0/+2RTFA
- EvilKaz, 11 hr 41 min ago, -1/+4Here in the UK you can pick up a 8GB prepay iphone for £343 from the official carrier O2. So not bad, if you want to use one on another network.
- xfile087, 5 hr 51 min ago, -0/+1Yes and I have one of these bad boys and they are STILL locked to O2, It's just PAYG... How much does that suck?
- arctic, 11 hr 40 min ago, -4/+4It will only unlock some iPhones. Title is inaccurate.
"This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you." - ROFL138, 11 hr 39 min ago, -6/+1i dont use a 3g and i have Attnt but since i follow all iphone mod news THUMBS UP to the dev team!
- GTOFan350, 11 hr 38 min ago, -3/+4How can we tell if your iphone is using the 2.11.07 baseband?? I'm guessing that you are using that baseband if your using firmware 2.1.
- toconnor, 11 hr 18 min ago, -0/+4Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware
2.2 OS = 02.28.00 baseband - kkiran, 6 hr ago, -0/+12.2 OS is not necessarily 2.28, if you are paying attention that is! http://www.ilikemyiphone.com/?p=539 and preserve baseband for the unlock! Simple ;)

- Radan, 11 hr 38 min ago, -6/+2Strange that it has taken this long. I mean, I don't know what it takes to unlock the iPhone, but seeing how there are already legally unlocked iPhones sold here in Europe, wouldn't it be possible to just copy the firmware that those iPhones use over to the locked ones? Or is there a hardware lock?
- teh_spazz, 9 hr 36 min ago, -0/+2Factory unlock != Software unlock.
Many people have taken apart the 3G to hardware unlock it, but that's risky business. - KingChronic, 3 hr 31 min ago, -0/+3afaik, those each have a unique NCK (Network Control Key) and the hashing / encryption of it is one way, so someone can't just "decrypt" their NCK on a locked phone. you cannot copy the firmware because that does not contain the lock state. you cannot copy the seczone, because although it does copy the lock state and such, the NCK will not correspond to the one that the device should have. you cannot even find an exploit that will allow you to re-write the bootloader / baseband, because the bootrom will sigcheck the bootloader at start time and will not work if it is patched. the bootloader also sigchecks the baseband at boot, obviously, and that will not work if it is patched. So basically, dev has found an exploit that allows them to use a modified baseband, and still bypass the bootloader signature checks. Or, they have found an exploit that allows them to run a payload at boot, and their payload would patch the baseband and / or bootloader accordingly, somewhat similar to the fakeblank hack for the 2G iPhones. My guess it is some kind of diagnostics thing that was left in, and Apple didn't notice it until 2.2 :P kind of like in firmware 1.1.4, for the S5L bootloader, iBoot, there was a command called 'diags' in which it could be passed a parameter, such as "diags 0x9000000", and it would start executing the code at that address, so you could send it a patched iBoot and then use that to boot it. In 2.0, Apple realized this, and fixed it so that it will check the iBoot flags to see if bit 4 is set, which would only be set if you had a special dev device that Apple engineers use and probably have locked in a vault along with a special CHIPID with that device to allow it.

- norcaldude, 11 hr 33 min ago, -2/+2the hack has been out for a while. i've been using a hacked 3G for 3 months now. and another thing, you can buy legit unlocked iphone 3Gs from apple's Hong Kong online store.
- TypeEE, 2 hr 9 min ago, -0/+1What do you mean by hacked? iPhone 3G has been jailbroken for a while, but not unlocked, so I am not sure what you meant by "Hacked" as jailbreaking is a hack too.
- Astark, 11 hr 32 min ago, -9/+3Didn't some nerd in China do this like, 3 months ago?
- xenodata, 11 hr 31 min ago, -1/+7Hooray for yellowsn0w!!! (Just don't eat it.)
- MrViklund, 11 hr 27 min ago, -25/+2Sorry. This in accurate. Stop call them iPhone Dev Team. The REAL iPhone Dev tea, works at Apple. This is just a few nerds with no work and too much time on their hands trying to take credit. Go and hack the Zune and the Xbox instead stop hack Apple.
I hope Apple updates iPhone 3G as soon as possible so it will be impossible to hack. BURIED.- gamabunta, 11 hr 5 min ago, -3/+10lol. fanboy.
- jimmyp3016, 10 hr 43 min ago, -1/+6lol you fag
- jonesyno, 10 hr 22 min ago, -1/+4Are you the blond tranny from youtube? LEAVE APPLE ALONE!!
- MCBenG, 6 hr 15 min ago, -1/+1So it's impossible to hack? that will never happen, everything is hackable, especially mac stuff lately.
And what's the point of hacking an X-box? It already gives you everything you can get out of the box...
Same with Zune, except it could still do more. But not without more firmware, not breaking the firmware.
And I like my phone plan, so just waiting for a 3g iTouch...
- rdeleonf, 11 hr 25 min ago, -1/+4Congratulations to the Dev Team!
What a way to start 2009!!
I'll be expecting that preview of yours.
Good Hunt! lol- kkiran, 5 hr 59 min ago, -1/+2Is it a coincidence : steve Jobs stepping down and iPhone 3G unlock stepping up!
- charredo, 11 hr 20 min ago, -2/+4Why do people buy products from two companies (AT&T and Apple) just to spend their entire working relationship with those two companies fighting against their bullsh-t DRM, contracts, proprietary formats, and general bad business practices.
I know it's not as "cool", but wouldn't it be easier just to use products that work the way you want right from the get go?- sorepheet, 10 hr 25 min ago, -0/+2I just wanted an iPod that could make calls- done. Everything else is bonus. Now that I rock an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone on T-Mobile it does just, "work the way I want." I've complimented the hardware with great software. Granted these are not sanctioned by Apple but having NES, GBA ROMs, video recording, cracked apps, MMS and customization options makes the experience great. Plus I'm not $helling out a bunch of cash for these features.
- dzw120, 4 hr 50 min ago, -0/+1It sucks, but they have what is arguably the best smartphone for non-corporate users. They've proven that customers are willing to stomach a crappy contract in exchange for a great piece of equipment. I wouldn't call it unnatural for two companies to try to maximize profitability.
It's still a dick move, but short of settling for a (subjectively) inferior product, what can you do? - TypeEE, 2 hr 8 min ago, -0/+2I guess you don't like an iPod, I am an iPod lover, and being able to combine it w/ phone functionality is just awesome. The apps are super icing on the cake.
- njhardc0re, 11 hr 14 min ago, -5/+4what gsm service is that much better than at&t? certainly not t-mobile. t-mobile has the worse service everywhere, especially in doors.
- njhardc0re, 11 hr 13 min ago, -0/+4and on top of that, I was paying verizon (yes not gsm i know) at least the same monthly fees BUT no unlimited internet and less than half the amount of txt messages!!!!
- BabyWookie, 10 hr 44 min ago, -0/+3Where I live in the US, there's no AT&T presence. Just a decent local GSM carrier.
- sorepheet, 10 hr 30 min ago, -0/+3AT&T blows... that whole Cingular stint was a giant fleecing IMHO. Cell coverage is always going to vary depending on where you are in the US. For me AT&T (then Cingular then AT&T again) was a decent choice. After dropped calls indoors I decided to make the switch to T-Mobile and have never been happier + I pay $5.99 for unlimited data on my 2G iPhone.
- javiero, 11 hr 14 min ago, -6/+1Will this work with my first gen iPhone to upgrade it to 2.0 without losing my unlock?
- sorepheet, 10 hr 33 min ago, -0/+1Forget yellowsn0w for what you need, stick with pwnage to upgrade your 2G to have it be unlocked/jailbroken.
- javiero, 9 hr 10 min ago, -0/+1will this put the apple store in it and i wont lose my unlock? do i first ungrade and THEN use pwnage? im sorry im sure al lthis sounds dumb to you, but im not very savvy on these things.. do you have a link with a step-by-step guide?
currenlty i have a iPhone 1.1.4 unlocked using ziphone

- pogoyoyo, 7 hr 59 min ago, -0/+1dude, you have an old iphone.
those were unlocked ages ago.
upgrade to 2.2 and jailbreak/unlock using pwnage...
you WILL lose all of your contacts and what not, but you will have the app store and podcast downloads, all the goodies.
- sorepheet, 10 hr 33 min ago, -0/+1Forget yellowsn0w for what you need, stick with pwnage to upgrade your 2G to have it be unlocked/jailbroken.
- Pos3idon, 11 hr 14 min ago, -11/+6I CAN HAZ WINDOWS UNLOCK?
- nseb, 10 hr 5 min ago, -0/+12no, you're a cat
- chazuk, 11 hr 8 min ago, -0/+2Good stuff Dev-Team.
Although I won't be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour (already updated to 2.2) I'll be donating on the webpage.
I've only recently experienced the joys of a jailbroken iPhone and that alone has made me love the thing! - satcomer, 11 hr 8 min ago, -2/+2By the story reports I have been reading the new 10.5.6 breaks pawnage of the iPhone 3G.
- sorepheet, 10 hr 35 min ago, -0/+3Honestly where are you reading these "story reports"? From Dev Team's Blog:
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
DFU Issues in OS X 10.5.6
Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.
We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -
1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)
/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext
2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.
3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!
- sorepheet, 10 hr 35 min ago, -0/+3Honestly where are you reading these "story reports"? From Dev Team's Blog:
- harvinator24, 11 hr 6 min ago, -0/+2At&t requires you to get a contract, they forced that on apple when they subsidized the price to 199 & 299.
- cthellis, 10 hr 13 min ago, -0/+1They required a contract to begin with, even when Apple was getting a cut of the subscription fee.
I still don't know how so many people in the US bitch about this... Unfortunately it's been our modus operendi since the dawn of the cell phone age.
Meanwhile, breaking your contract simply costs you money, which is usually less than the extra you would have paid for an unlocked phone to begin with. But somehow people consider the contract sacrosanct...
- cthellis, 10 hr 13 min ago, -0/+1They required a contract to begin with, even when Apple was getting a cut of the subscription fee.
- Quick2822, 10 hr 47 min ago, -0/+6It sucks that so many cell phone companies in the US use different technology.
Whenever I read about these unlocked phones, it means nothing to me, since I'm on a CDMA carrier.- sorepheet, 10 hr 37 min ago, -0/+4Seriously, this is great news for the world in general, just not my little world of the US of A. Still rocking my 2G on T-Mobile for now.
- Quick2822, 9 hr 56 min ago, -2/+1I don't know how an unlocked iPhone constitutes "great news for the world" but it is good news for those people who want an iPhone but can't get one.
- sorepheet, 10 hr 37 min ago, -0/+4Seriously, this is great news for the world in general, just not my little world of the US of A. Still rocking my 2G on T-Mobile for now.
- bfoot, 10 hr 44 min ago, -7/+2One positive thing I got out of my iphone is I will *NOT* buy any more apple products.
- cthellis, 10 hr 15 min ago, -1/+2Any particular reason? Or is this another "I wanted to do a whole bunch of things, and it can't do some, and I didn't do five minutes of research to note that before I bought it", "at&t service nearby me is bad, so Apple sucks," or "despite my not liking it right away, I decided not to return it, because I'd rather sit for a few years and let it fester" thing?
- Ommatidia, 10 hr 1 min ago, -1/+2Here's a hint: it might have something to do with the article.
- Ommatidia, 10 hr 5 min ago, -1/+2Good.
Let your money talk for you. That's the only way that Apple will listen (obviously, the millions of complaints didn't work). - darkism, 9 hr 15 min ago, -2/+3Your loss.
- sorepheet, 10 hr 38 min ago, -0/+4Now if only there were a way around the radio frequencies utilized by T-Mobile's USA 3g network so that the iPhone could fully realize the unlock in the states... meh, good news for those across the pond.
