cryfCHIEFS CHRISTEN UNIQUE YOUTH FOOTBALL Field

As a child, we all dream of following in the footsteps of those which we look up to. For some it’s a parent or military member, for others it’s a firefighter or politician. For youth football players it’s undoubtedly their favorite gridiron gladiators. That’s why the Kansas City Chiefs were so excited to recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opened a new youth-specific football field at the team’s Practice Facility.

Flanked by a dozen Chiefs players and over a hundred youth football players, Team President Carl Peterson addressed those in attendance with a broad smile stretched across his face. The event drew quite an audience. Lamar Hunt, Jr. and his wife Rita were in attendance along with the likes of KC Wolf, the Chiefs Cheerleader, administrators from local youth football leagues, and Jackson County Legislators. Once the ribbon fell to the ground and the field was officially opened for business, the youth football players present were in for quite a treat.

At that point, the kids were separated into groups and assigned to a certain location of the field. There they received special instruction for the Chiefs players. As the time went on, the children were able to rotate to all five stations where as they honed their football skills. When the final horn sounded to bring the day to its conclusion, these football players, NFL and youth alike, seemed nearly giddy with the day’s events.

Erected in the shadows of Arrowhead Stadium, this field is made possible via the Chiefs Children’s Fund, the Hunt family and the NFL Youth Football Funding Board. It will provide area youth teams with an opportunity unlike any other in the metro area. Youth games and practices will take place on this field seven days a week (excluding Chiefs home games) for the next two months. Leagues committed to utilize the field this fall include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, Heart of America Pop Warner, Kansas City Pop Warner, Police Athletic League, and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. In all, 10,000 local youth are anticipated to utilize this field in its first year of use.

This new Sprinturf youth football field will also become just the second of its kind located at an NFL team’s official training facility. Between the state-of-the-art Sprinturf playing surface and field’s location, it will enable all youth to dream big and feel as though they are a part of the Chiefs themselves.

The Chiefs efforts to promote and expand youth football are at the forefront of the organization’s focus to improve youth sports and academics in Kansas City. With the addition of this field, the Chiefs organization has now donated $1.75 million for metro-area field refurbishments and/or construction in the past decade. In addition to youth-field enhancements, the organization is involved with the Play it Smart, ATLAS & ATHENA, and Junior Player Development programs, just to name a few.

“ And Local Dentists buy tickets for the children treated to their first NFL Game while supplies last!“

On Saturday, September 13th, 2008 — opening weekend at Arrowhead Stadium — Bring your grills not for barbequing but for free dental care, TeamSmile will hold its third annual dental outreach program, ‘Kansas City Oral Health Care Day’.  Chiefs punter, Dustin Colquitt, returns for his third year as TeamSmile Spokesman for the NFL programs. TeamSmile is a non-profit organization that partners with local sports and dental professionals to provide quality dental care to the underserved children of Kansas City. With the help of committed sponsors and select dental manufacturers, TeamSmile will provide dental treatment, multi-media oral health education (on video I-PODS), dental screenings and cleanings. The UMKC dental school will again be apart of the program, and will volunteer their time to provide dental screenings to the underserved children of Kansas City.  TeamSmile is a state-of-the-art program; it is the first dental outreach program on record to have integrated a complete computer network. This network, powered by Dentrix Dental Systems and DEXIS Digital X-Ray, will allow the dental volunteers to electronically store the children’s x-rays and procedure records. This means more efficient and more effective high-quality care.  The patients will be able to leave the program on Saturday with a USB bracelet with their x-rays and dental records (Dentrix E-Dental Record).  This provides a way to extend the patients dental history to the next provider and have record of the child in case the child goes missing. The environmentally conscience program is also completely paperless.

Last year, the outreach program treated three hundred children. This year TeamSmile hopes to treat between five and seven hundred children. Organizations that are being served are ‘Operation Breakthrough’, ‘El Centro’, ‘Shriners Hospital for Children’, ‘Big Brothers Big Sisters. And, for the first time this year, ‘Kansas City Oral Health Care Day’ will be open to the public from 1-5 PM. Children ages two through seventeen will get a free dental screening, fluoride treatment, and a Colgate backpack loaded with goodies while supplies last and lunch will be served free to visters compliments of the Shriners all day. So come out for a day of dental health and fun!.

There will be free giveaways, games, face painting and entertainment from 104.1 Jack FM, as well as appearances by the Kansas City Chiefs mascot KC Wolf, the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders, Shriner Clowns, Dustin Colquitt; Chiefs punter and other Chiefs players. The TeamSmile football exhibition team will also be there to throw the football around and give tips to the kids for their upcoming football seasons! Free athletic mouth guards will be passed out while supplies last.

Dr. Bill Busch, founder of TeamSmile stated, “With the KC Royals, Willie Wilson Baseball and TeamSmile were able to treat 133 children with $104,000 worth of free dental work on July 26th, 2008. Our goal is to quadruple that with the Chiefs event!“

What’s New in 2008?

  • Tripling the amount of dental treatment rooms from four to twelve
  • Oral Surgery procedures
  • E4D CAD/CAM Dentistry- All porcelain crowns and veneers delivered in a single visit no impression and no temporaries.  First time ever at an outreach program.

Chiefs Announce Recipient of 2009 Children’s Charity Game

ch300The Kansas City Chiefs announced that the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI) has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the annual Chiefs Children’s Charity Game.

CCVI is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit agency located on the Children’s Center Campus at 3101 Main Street in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. The Center’s mission is to prepare children who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities, to function at their highest potential in the sighted world. CCVI provides a comprehensive program for children, birth through school age, that includes highly specialized instruction, therapies and family education. Currently, CCVI has an approximate enrollment of 200 children while servicing 350 unique individuals a year.

“We are very proud that since its inception in 1984, the Chiefs Children’s Charity Game has raised more than $6 million for worthy causes in the Kansas City community,” Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said. “As an organization, the Chiefs consider it our responsibility and our privilege to serve the communities of our fans – particularly those in Jackson County. By partnering with CCVI, we plan to build upon the Chiefs legacy of service to strengthen our community here in Jackson County.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to be teaming up with the Chiefs for the 25th Annual Chiefs Children’s Charity Game,” Mary Lynne Dolembo, Executive Director of the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired noted. “Our hope is that through the generosity of the Chiefs and our community, we will be able to expand our programs for blind babies, toddlers and many, many more children in the future. The Chiefs long history of community involvement has benefited numerous children’s charities over the years. We are honored to become a part of this wonderful Kansas City tradition.”

Earlier this year, the Chiefs joined with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to jointly administer an application process. Qualified agencies interested in becoming the recipient of the 2009 Charity Game first submitted a preliminary letter of interest prior to an official application.

Over the last four years, the Chiefs Children’s Charity Game has amassed in excess of $2 million for St. Vincent’s Operation Breakthrough, including a record $750,000 in 2005. Celebrating its 24th season in 2008, the game is recognized throughout the NFL as the league’s top charity game. This year’s game will take place on Saturday, August 16th and is expected to surpass the $500,000 mark in funds raised.

Over the years, the Chiefs and the Chiefs Children’s Fund have worked with generous individuals and businesses in Kansas City to make life better for children in our community. In the past, local agencies such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, Don Bosco, Niles Home and Ozanam have all received much-needed funding as a result of the Chiefs Children’s Charity Game.

The Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp Presented by First National Bank to Return in 2008

firstnationalThe Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp, presented by First National Bank, will be held in Kansas City for the second time on May 17th and May 18th at the Chiefs Practice Facility. Over 150 volunteer coaches will assist the Chiefs coaching staff and players in providing instruction for football and more importantly, the skills necessary to become winners in the game of life. During the course of the camp, Edwards will share seven core concepts with the campers and will expound on their importance both in life and on the football field – Expectations, Priorities, Commitment, Choices, Integrity, Teamwork and Sportsmanship.

“My family is very excited that the Chiefs and First National Bank have teamed up once again to bring our football camp to Kansas City,” Edwards commented. “These youngsters will leave our camp with a solid understanding of some basic football fundamentals, but more importantly, we hope to send them back to their communities and schools as better citizens and students.”

“First National Bank is excited to sponsor this event for the second year,” noted First National Bank President Mike Earleywine. “Last year our bank saw 1,000 children walk away from this event with an experience they will never forget. Coach Edwards is such an inspiration to these young children. We applaud him for making a difference in the lives of so many Kansas City youth.”

Edwards’ name has become synonymous with this type of endeavor. While this represents the second year for the Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp in Kansas City, it is far from the first youth camp this seven-year NFL head coaching veteran has organized. Having grown up on the Monterey Peninsula and graduated from Monterey High School, he hosts a similar clinic in his native California each summer. Entering its 13th season in 2008, Edwards’ California camp is a rousing success and has grown in size each year. That version quickly served as Edwards’ inspiration to bring a similar camp to Kansas City.

The Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp presented by First National Bank is the latest in the organization’s commitment to support youth football initiatives. Other youth football programs that the Chiefs are involved with include honoring a High School Coach of the Week and Year for both Kansas and Missouri, inviting over 3,000 youth football players and coaches to the annual Chiefs Youth Football Game, has donated over $1 million in Grassroots field grants to local agencies and schools, partnering with the National Football Foundation’s “Play it Smart” program as well as the NFL’s Junior Player Development skills camp and will be a pilot program for the new Atlas & Athena substance abuse curriculum.

First National Bank was established in Kansas in 1993 as part of one of the oldest and most successful financial organizations in the Midwest, First National of Nebraska. Since its founding, First National Bank has established an outstanding reputation in the community and has grown to $1.1 billion in assets.

DRIVE AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER

Five local organizations concerned about men’s health have teamed up to bring a one-of-a-kind venue to screen men for prostate cancer and educate them and their families about risk, early detection and clinical trials. The Drive Against Prostate Cancer features a 39-foot recreational vehicle, provided by the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, specifically designed for prostate cancer screening and equipped with a large flat screen TV, satellite programming, access to the Internet, healthy snacks and an informal “locker room” atmosphere.

Hundreds of men can be screened for free each day from December 15-18. The screening consists of a simple blood test and a physical examination. Local physicians will provide these free and confidential screenings in as little as 10 minutes without an appointment. Each man will receive a notification letter than explains the test results, and provides a list of local resources for follow-up care and additional information.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Cancer Center, Gail’s Harley Davidson, Cerner Corporation, American Cancer Society, and DST Systems, Inc. have joined forces to bring the Drive to Kansas City. While the screenings will be offered at several locations over the four days, perhaps the most visible location will be on December 16 as thousands of fans will see the vehicle as they enter Arrowhead Stadium.

“We, at the Chiefs, are pleased to join with our marketing partners in supporting this effort to increase prostate cancer awareness. This disease has personally touched our organization as we lost our founder Lamar Hunt to it this past year. The Kansas City Chiefs are committed to helping encourage our male fans everywhere to get screened each year. Early detection is the key to controlling and eliminating this disease,” said Carl Peterson, President/GM/CEO of Kansas City Chiefs Football Club.

One in every six men will get prostate cancer sometime in his life with more than 218,000 new cases expected this year. An estimated 27,000 men will die this year from prostate cancer. “We are pleased to be partnering with other leading organizations in the area, especially the Kansas City Chiefs, to increase the awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of screening that can not only save lives but save quality of life,” said Mark Myron, MD, President of Kansas City Cancer Center.

Visit the National Prostate Cancer Coalition online at www.fightprostatecancer.org for full details of each screening event in Kansas City (including dates, times, locations), or for more information on prostate cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.
