Just when you thought that 2007 couldn't be topped, the gaming industry has come out with another banner year for gamers, chock full of triple-A titles across all systems. The sheer amount of great games in 2008 can be pretty daunting, but luckily GameZone has compiled our annual Buyer's Guide to give you a hand in picking up some of the best that this year has to offer.

Xbox 360
Publisher: Microsoft
  • Another year, another huge roster of additions to Microsoft's high-def console. Great new additions to the Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band franchises are heavy hitters this year, as well as long-awaited titles like Fable 2, Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV making for another banner year for the system.

  • Playstation 3
    Publisher: Sony
  • Since its launch, Sony's console-cum-entertainment system has been gradually gaining momentum, not to mention a library of fantastic games. System exclusives like Metal Gear Solid IV, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 offer visceral and unique gameplay experiences, drawing a pretty compelling line in the sand against the competition.

  • WII
    Publisher: Nintendo
  • Still benefitting from strong buzz and word of mouth, Nintendo’s quirky little console is still the system to look for this holiday season. For gamers that already own one, this proved to be quite a strong year for the system, with fan favorites like Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl launching, as well as innovative new concepts like Wii Fit.

  • PC

  • A stalwart force in gaming for decades, the PC succeeds in being more than just a niche market, but one of the sources for some of the greatest gaming experiences you're likely to find in this or any year. Check out Fallout 3, Crysis: Warhead, Warhammer Online, or any number of titles to see what we mean.

  • DS
    Publisher: Nintendo
  • The most successful console this generation is (surprise!) a handheld, and a look at the DS's huge library will show you why. This year marked another hugely successful one for the system, and titles like Final Fantasy IV, Ninjatown, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia are great reasons to get on board.

  • Playstation 2
    Publisher: Sony
  • Even though all of the focus seems to be primarily on Sony's high-def console, the system's predecessor, the PS2, is still going strong. With great titles like Yakuza 2 and Persona 3: FES launching this year, there is proof that there's still life in the ol' system yet.

  • Playstation Portable
    Publisher: Sony
  • While many out there would still doubt that a handheld can provide an experience that rivals a console, those who've played a PSP this year would have plenty of cause to disagree. And, with titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and Patapon all launching this year, who can blame them?
