GameSpot: Best of 2008

Least Improved Sequel

As this category proves, a great sequel is a real rarity. In fact, it's so uncommon that you won't find a single one in this whole section. Sure, the following sequels captured some of the magic that made their previous entries so successful and popular, but they didn't do anything surprising. Rather than venturing forth in bold new directions and developing awesome ideas, they were too content to rest on their laurels. That isn't to say that these games are necessarily bad; after all, they're more of the same great game that came out before them. But they weren't bursting with the new and exciting content that their predecessors led you to expect, and that's why they're receiving this dubious honor in 2008.

This is kind of sad. R6V2 had few improvements but it was still a real fun game.

I guess it does belong in this category, though. Although they added a thing or two to the game, they didn't fix any of the glaring problems from the first one.

Koei, please go back to the way things were.

DW5 was amazing, but DW6 is easily the worst *Warriors game I've ever played. It wasn't broken, so it shouldn't have been fixed... especially when fixing the game means raping every ounce of fun out of it. I can't wait for DW: Gundam 2 and SW3 had better be awesome.

wtf is ninja gaiden 2 doing here, i admit that it was almost the same as the original ninja gaiden, but the few improvements it had were great and made the game even better

yes DW 6 is winning. Ladders and Swimming? HAH!!! all koei does is look at their sales record rather than the reviews. theres no new strategy (ok soldiers lets hop into the river so we can become completely defenseless against incoming arrows rather than face the enemy who would not even dare to lay a hand on us in a million years oh yea VICTORY STRATEGY!!!!)

It's definately Animal Crossing. The Chrono Trigger DS remake was more of a sequel than that game.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is one of the best games I've played this year.

GOW2 should be on this list.....aside from Horde mode, multiplayer was lackluster and not improved, some weapons are almost meaningless in the campaign (Torque Bow, Hammer of Dawn aside from the end), boss fights are much inferior to the first (the end boss isnt even a fight). The new weapons added are mainly just shields (meat shield is lame and not even needed). The vehicular combat was not really fun or rewarding. GOW2 is a good game but not game of the year worthy at all. The only thing done better was the story.

Kinda hoped Gears of War II would be up here.

Not that it was awful, I just think that the first one really stands alone in the series. And I was definately expecting something.....I don't want to say "Better", but what I got wasn't what I was expecting.

Why the hell is Ninja Gaiden 2 on this list?
Oh thats right the reviewers (ducebags) still suck at playing this game. And Ninja Gaiden 2 is not boring, Devil May Cry 4 is because it's too easy, and the reviewers give higher scores to games that are easy enough for 5 year olds to play.

This has got to be between the first two - in comparison, the other three have had meaningful improvements.
