After the Notorious B.I.G. died, Puffy signed Biggie sound-alike Shyne. Now we have former Harlem World soldier Loon, who sounds just like Mase. Was this really necessary? Loon uses his somnolent drawl to deliver rhymes undistinguished in flow and content. He sports the careful coif and limited aspirations of a second-rate R&B crooner; accordingly, most of his debut targets the fairer sex. Much of the time, Loon is just insipid, despite a few convincing come-ons (notably, "Like a Movie," featuring City High's Claudette Ortiz). Ironically, when Loon breaks free from his pattern, on the moral-laden narratives "Story" and "Don't Wanna Die" or the joke-poking "This Ain't Funny," he's the most seductive of all. Fancy that.
