WHEN IT COMES TO buying electronics, patience is a virtue.

Sure, being among the first to own a MacBook Air, Motorola Ming2 or other hot gadget does wonders for your coolness factor. But the trade-offs for early adoption are steep. Holdouts almost universally get a better deal: lower prices, as well as fewer bugs and more technological advancements for their buck. "There are always advantages to waiting; it's just a matter of, do you have the patience?" says David Carnoy, executive editor for electronics review site CNET. "You have to decide whether you really need that gadget right now."
