Instant Cinematic Gratification

Blockbuster ups the OnDemand ante with the introduction of the MediaPoint Digital Media Player, made by 2Wire.

Instead of treking to the store, you can download movies you want to watch, when you want to watch them, no computer required.

Find out more after the jump.

Blockbuster hopes to make downloadable rentals a home theater staple by offering OnDemand movies with progressive playback through their new MediaPoint Digital Media Player. Using a wired or wireless broadband connection, viewers can watch while still downloading while avoiding the buffer issues that generally come with streaming content.

Movies can also be saved for later, with the MediaPoint player holding up to 5 SD or 2 HD movies at a time.

Once stored, rentals can stay on the player for up to 30 days un-viewed or 24 hours after pressing play.

Most titles are SD resolution and Blockbuster claims DVD quality. This is output via HDMI or component, and if so desired, upconverted internally up to 1080i.

An optical output along with standard analog are availiable on the audio side.

While HD selections are currently limited, Blockbuster claims there will be more as time goes on.

Sadly, the USB and removable storage slot are not currently enabled on the unit, but their presence glimmers with the promise of potential features to come with future firmware updates.

While convenient, the content does come a price: the MediaPoint player only offers stereo audio. Although this is consistent with current downloadable media standards, movie-watching purists may be turned off by the loss of 5.1 surround sound. But with the bonus of parental controls and Blockbuster’s assurance that unlike many video-on-demand services, new releases to DVD are generally available within 30 days; consumers may just be willing to overlook the loss of audio options.

The Blockbuster MediaPoint Digital Media Player is free with the purchase a $99 movie rental package that provides 25 downloads. After the initial package is used up, additional titles range from $1.99 to $3.99. To find out more, or order the player go to .

PRICE: $99 (includes 25 downloads), then $1.99-3.99 per movie
