Cubin Fights Devils Tower Name Change
Introduces Measure to Bar Any Name Change to Historic Monument

Washington - In response to a request from a constituent at a recent town hall meeting in Sundance, U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin (R-WY) introduced legislation today to preserve forever the name of Devils Tower in northeast Wyoming.

"The citizens who live and work around Devils Tower have made it crystal clear that they do not want to tamper with the name of this unique monument," said Cubin. "Changing the name of the most recognizable landmark in Wyoming would only result in a loss of the area's identity -- an identity that is crucial to the tourist industry that helps drive the local economies around the monument."

The legislation introduced by Rep. Cubin will ensure that the name of Devils Tower National Monument remains unchanged. The bill is expected to be referred to the House Resources Committee, a committee Rep. Cubin helps lead as the Vice Chairman.

Cubin added that her office has over the years received petitions with an estimated 2,000 names from not only those in and around the Devils Tower monument but from people around the country opposing any name change to the landmark.

"It is my belief and the belief of scores of people from around the Devils Tower region that a name change will harm the tourist trade and bring economic hardship to area communities," said Cubin. "I will not stand by and allow that to happen."
