Chinese Dialects Classification

This is an outline of the classification of Chinese dialects by branch names, or go here to search a city or county by province (all listed on one page). Many of the pages now include maps of the dialect regions with place markers. Most of my data coming specifically from the Hànyǔ Fāngyán Dà Cídiǎn (汉语方言大词典) lists 2,119 county and city names which may also include other townships and villages where dialect variation occurs within a county. The Hànyǔ Fāngyán Dà Cídian does not list each and every locality within counties as long as the county as a whole is representative of one dialect variant. One cannot count the number of dialects by the number of placenames in this list. The localities listed here are classified within 150 dialect divisions.
