Is the iPhone the Best Place for Downloadable Games?

Dec. 17 3:58 PM by Terry Terrones

Not quite yet but its certainly on the right track. As it is, if you're an iPhone or iPod Touch owner, you have to be downright giddy with some of the games that are available to you right now. Aurora Feint, Spore, Bejeweled 2, and SimCity are just few of the titles you can play. Not only are they creatively done, they're inexpensive.

It's only going to get better. Today Konami announced that Frogger, DanceDanceRevolution, Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid will be making their way to the iTunes Store next year. Looks like I shouldn't have asked for that Truth About Chuck Norris book for Christmas.

Hit the jump to see Konami's official press release.

Rock Band Goes (Gulp) Country

Dec. 16 3:55 PM by Terry Terrones

Finally! Its about damn time some country music made its way to Rock Band. Today's Going Country 5-pack is way overdue. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten tired of playing this rock and or roll music. Its too loud, too fast and the lyrics don't mention pickups, dogs or rodeos enough. I've been missing the soothing sounds of fiddles and banjos and clever song titles like "Mud on the Tires" and "Hillbilly Deluxe" (actually available in this week's DLC). It also gives me a chance to play a game while wearing my brahma bull shirt. You know the one, it has snaps instead of buttons. I've only spilled Coors on it 500 times.

While I wait for the Spoons and Little Brown Jug peripherals, I'm going to suggest some honest to goodness country songs that we should be able to download next. "All My Exes Live in Texas", "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy", "You've Got Sawdust on the Floor of Your Heart", "I Want A Beer As Cold as My Ex-Wife's Heart", "I'll Tennessee You in My Dreams", and "Poultry Promenade" would be a good start.

Hit the jump to take a peek at this week's countrified downloads.

Review: Strong Bad Episode 5 8-Bit Is Enough

Dec. 15 7:09 PM by Terry Terrones

As the Wachowski brothers will surely attest, making a great trilogy is almost impossible. Even tougher? Making a great quintupology, which is damn near inconceivable (just ask George Lucas). You'd have better luck trying to perform your own brain surgery than making a good series of anything that lasts longer than the magic number of three, but time and again someone gives it a shot.

The fine people at Telltale Games - with shirtless, boxing glove and mask wearing, wannabe tough guy, one-liner dropping Strong Bad as their lead - have done episodic gaming about as well as it can be done. The final chapter, "8-Bit is Enough", was released today and while it is the weakest installment of the series, its good enough to prove that sometimes even the inconceivable is possible.

Weekly 360 and Wii Downloads: Gears 2 Maps, Strong Bad 5

Dec. 15 5:21 PM by Terry Terrones

A veritable potpourri of downloadable content this week, yet surprisingly, no XBLA games. Or at least none that I've heard just yet.

So what is on the menu? Three new Gears of War 2 maps, Rock Band 2 DLC (more on that tomorrow), a record two PSN games coming out in the same week (Crash Commando, Savage Moon), three downloadable Wii offerings (Strong Bad Episode 5: 8-Bit Is Enough, Big Kahuna Party and Enduro Racer) and a special offer on an App Store game (Shaky Summit selling for only one dollar, $4 less than normal).

To top it all off I received a press release today letting me know that more Pearl Jam is coming to Rock Band...in March. Why did someone feel the need to announce this in December? Who knows.

Hit the jump for all the info on this week's many releases, and look for the Strong Bad 5 review shortly.

Iron Man and Tony Manero are on the iPhone

Dec. 13 9:58 PM by Terry Terrones

What? You don't know who Tony Manero is?!? You're trying to tell me you don't remember the name of John Travolta's character in Saturday Night Fever? Me either, I had to look it up on imbd. Why do I bring up a movie from 1977? Glad you asked. If you're a SNF fanboy you'll be happy to know Mr. Manero (or more accurately, his virtual likeness) has made his way to the iPhone and the iPod Touch. So has Iron Man, but not in the same game. That would just be weird.

In case you haven't been paying attention, some pretty cool stuff has been coming out for the iPhone. The games for it are creative and inexpensive. Just the way I like'em.

Hit the jump for all the info on these two new games, look for their reviews next week.

Review - Defense Grid: The Awakening

Dec. 12 3:54 PM by Sean Ely

It's amazing what a little touch up in graphics and sound can do for a tower defense gameplay-based title. And Hidden Path Entertainment's Defense Grid: The Awakening is a prime example of that sudden transformation of taking a unoriginal. well-known style of video game and turning it into a masterpiece for your PC.

Gamers at every level of play will face hordes of 15 various alien species that come in waves, all with one simple goal to accomplish: steal your cores. You won't just be asked to protect them, you'll be asked to utterly destroy anything that even looks at the brightly lit objects the wrong way. And your artillery? It comes from the construction of 10 brands of towers, all with different attack levels, ranges and upgrade possibilities. Some of the fortifications include lasers, meteors and temporals that slow down the aliens' movement to the cores. The object of the game is to strategically place these towers across the map to nuke the treasure-snatching creatures and put them out of their misery, piling on gunshots, infernos and laser beams as much as possible.
