Video in the Sidebar, “Lights and Sound” covers “Muse”, Info on Zrateam

Published by admin under Bands at the Grand, The Grand

Check out the sidebar information on our site.  There’s pages, a calendar, video, and more!
Update:  video in the left sidebar:  The vid is of the alternative & progressive rock cover band “Lights and Sound“, which was formed late in the fall of 2007 and is comprised of Carleton College students:
Jean Porter (bass)
Jim Avery (vocals)
Ezra “Zra” Velazquez (guitar/backup-vocals)
and the drummer in the video: Grant Buckingham
For the event seen in the video, Battle of the Bands 2008, they decided to cover the British band MUSE.  The vid is a cover of Time is Running Out.  All band members are currently Juniors (Class of 2010) at Carleton College.  Since bassist Jean Porter is currently studying rhinos in Africa, they are taking a hiatus until she returns late in December/early January of 2009.
“Zra” is Ezra Velazquez, and is a stage name given by a High School teacher who said everyone needed an alter ego.  She started saying it, students started using it, and it stuck.
“ZraTeam” (Zrateam Youtube channel) is the name of a multimedia group that designs/creates websites, creates video shorts and music videos, and takes photos for folks. Basic rule of thumb is that if it’s multimedia related, they probably have their foot in it. Here is the ZraTeam website.

FYI,  besides being in Lights and Sound, Zra is in two other bands which performed at the Battle of the Bands, 2008.  He’s the guitarist for the hard/rhythm/rock band “conCarne” and the bassist for the punk band “Horton Hears a Who“. Here are a few clips of HHaW (Youtube):

Enjoy!  Thanks to Ezra Velazquez for the information.  Enjoy your last few breaths of summer, Zra.

Monroe Crossing at the Grand Event Center Northfield

Published by admin under Bands at the Grand

Minnesota’s Bluegrass Ambassadors are coming to Northfield!  You’ve probably heard them before.  Monroe Crossing is Lisa, Art, Matt, Benji and Mark and they will fiddle and strum good stuff for us on September 12th, 2008, at 7:00 p.m.

In the name, this group honors the late legendary bluegrass ledgend Bill Monroe, who is often called “the father of Bluegrass.”

You can buy CDs online and you can listen if you find the video on the right hand side of their site.  (image www.monroecrossing.com and Katryn Conlin)

Rock On Cali blogger Christina Boggs, who has a passion for music in general, captured this video of “At Last” by Monroe Crossing (We love it.  Now that is beautiful, sultry sound):

It’s Jack Knife & The Sharps! At the Grand, September 6th, 2008

Published by admin under Bands at the Grand

Ready for Rockabilly?  Here to entertain you on September 6th, 2008, at 8:00PM will be none other than JKATS! On guitar and vocals, Ric Hollister; on drums, John Sandbo; on bass, Maria Meade; and vocals are provided by Erin MacCawley.

Can the band really be that old?  I needed a calculator to figure it out.  According to their website, Jack Knife & The Sharps was established in 1833.  JKATS has entertained the US troops in places like Sarajevo, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq.  We enjoy having them at the Grand. (image www.jackknifesharps.com)

You can see ‘em in action on their site, but the vids are slow to load (doesn’t seem to be streaming).  We liked Down the Line and Oh-O-O Baby.

We leave you with this line from the JKATS website:

“Rockabilly music is emotional gasoline.” - B. Lee Cooper
