Oleh Hornykiewicz received his MD degree from the University of Vienna in 1951. He joined the faculty of his alma mater that same year and has worked there ever since, including a 20-year stint as chairman of the Institute of Biochemical Pharmacology. In 1967 he began a long association with the University of Toronto in Canada, culminating in his being named professor emeritus at that institution in 1992.

Hornykiewicz is a member of 15 professional societies around the world and has served on numerous scientific advisory boards. Among his many honors over the past 36 years are the Gold Medal for Research in Parkinson's Disease from the Canadian Parkinson's Disease Association (in 1970), the Ludwig Wittgenstein Prize in Austria (1993) and, in the United States, the Kaul Foundation Award of Excellence in the Field of Medicine and Science (2001).
