Colombians Reject Legalizing Abortion

August 02, 2005

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in Colombia are opposed to pregnancy termination, according to a poll by YanHaas released by Radio RCN. 65.6 per cent of respondents think abortion should remain illegal.

In Colombia, abortion is not permitted under any circumstance, and is deemed a crime against personal integrity and life. In 1997, the country's Constitutional Court ruled that the right of rape victims to seek pregnancy termination "cannot take precedence over the life of the unborn."

In June, Human Rights Watch issued a statement calling Colombia's abortion-related penal sanctions as "inconsistent with international human rights obligations."
