News & Notes , January 8, 2009 · Last night in Oakland, Calif., protests over the police shooting of an unarmed man turned violent.

Demonstrators smashed storefronts and cars, set cars on fire, and blocked streets over the death of 22-year-old Oscar Grant III.

On New Year's Day, a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer shot and killed Grant, and the incident was recorded by onlookers.

For more, Farai Chideya talks with freelance reporter Bob Butler and attorney John Burris.

Burris filed a $25 million lawsuit against the Bay Area Rapid Transit on behalf of Grant's mother and the mother of his child.
