Amerikanen Wrest har med sin skapelse Leviathan för en tid sedan släppt sin andra fullängdare, "The Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide". Jag fick kontakt med Wrest för att låta honom få en chans att berätta lite mer om sin skapelse och vad han tycker om sitt senaste album.


Kan du börja med att presentera dig själv och ditt band för de läsare som inte har hört om Leviathan?
Wrest - Leviathan är jag och jag ensam… Jag har spelat in material som Leviathan sedan år 1998.

Hur har reaktionerna varit på ditt nyaste album "The Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide" och är du nöjd med hur albumet blev?
Wrest - Jag antar att reaktionerna har varit goda… folk verkar lite lyssna på det. Helhetsmässigt så tycker jag att det är den mest sammansatta (sångstrukturer, texter, toner, o.s.v.) grupp av sånger som jag gjort. Jag tycker gitarr soundet saknar något och trummorna är aningen begravda. Jag gillar dock hur högt basen låter.

Då jag lyssnar på albumet kan jag höra influenser från tidiga Burzum, håller du med mig om det och har Burzum haft en inverkan på dig då det gäller att skriva musik? Vika saker (både musikaliska och icke-musikaliska) har haft mest inflytande på ditt musikskrivande?
Wrest - Burzum har haft en inverkan på hela mitt liv, men jag är trött på denna jämförelse… den är sövande och tråkig.

Albumets titel är rätt så intressant, kan du förklara vad du menar då du säger att självmord har undernivåer? Och vad händer på den tionde undernivån?
Wrest - Numret är slumpartat… det handlar om olika stadier/nivåer av begrundande mot en handling. Den självförintande handlingen.

Kan du berätta lite om texterna på albumet, finns det något speciellt tema som de följer och varifrån kommer inspirationen till texterna? Anser du att texterna är en viktig del av din musik?
Wrest - Alla texterna, förutom två, handlar om självmord, i en eller annan form. Texter är väldigt viktiga och även väldigt svåra för mig… stundvis låter det sätt saker kommer ut som ord som strunt. Jag anser mig inte vara någon poet, inte på något sätt.

Har du någonsin stött på några problem med ditt bandnamn, då det finns så många andra band med samma namn som ditt? Jag känner till åtminstone sex andra band med samma namn, varav tre av dessa kommer också från USA.
Wrest - De två existerande band jag känner till är det svenska B.M bandet och någon rock akt från Atlanta. Om någon har något problem med det så har de aldrig sagt det åt mig. Jag bryr mig hur som helst inte. Låt dem komma till mig.

Du har släppt en imponerande mängd material sedan 1998, då du grundade Leviathan. Hur finner du tid att skriva så mycket material och spela in det, tycker du inte att det är svårt att kombinera ditt vardagliga liv (arbete, studier, familj o.s.v.) med arbetet du måste lägga ner på musiken?
Wrest - Långa perioder av inget annat än att gå till jobbet och arbeta… komma hem och arbeta, sova, repetera. Det senaste året har jag dock lugnat ner mig lite.

Ditt kontrakt med Tumult Records räckte inte länge, var kontraktet endast för utgivningen av "Verrater" eller hände något mellan dig och skivbolaget? Du har nu ett kontrakt med Moribund Records, hur fick du i kontakt med dem och är du nöjd med samarbetet? För hur många album har du kontrakt?
Wrest - Det finns inga kontrakt med Tumult… Andee är strålande och jag uppskattar hans vision för Tumult… men det är inte ett metal bolag och skulle inte släppa ut material lika snabbt som jag har behov till. Efter "Verrater" började jag skicka runt demon och Moribund svarade först. De har släppt några riktigt strålande skivor… Odin älskar ännu och behöver rå underground devil musik.

Spelar du live eller kommer du att hålla Leviathan som ett strikt enmans studioband? Har du haft några tankar på att hitta fler medlemmar till bandet?
Wrest - Just nu har jag ingen tid för det. Jag skulle vilja spela live i framtiden.

Jag läste i en gammal intervju att du gör tatueringar, hur började du med det och har du någon form av affär? Har du något annat intresse du skulle vilja berätta om för läsarna?
Wrest - Ja, men jag vill hålla detta väldigt skilt från Leviathan.

Vad är dina planer för framtiden? När kan vi vänta oss att något nytt material ska bli utgivet?
Wrest - Det kommer att komma en split CD med Crebain som ska snart släppas genom Tumult Records. "Tentacles Of Horror", nästa Moribund skiva kommer att släppas i början av '04 och en split med franska Ad Hominem ska arbetas fram under '04.

Och slutligen, en klassisk fråga. Varför korsade kycklingen vägen?
Wrest - Paranoia!!!!!

The American Wrest has with his creation Leviathan a while ago released his second full-length album, The Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide". I got in contact with Wrest to let him present his creation and tell me a little bit more about his newest release.


Could you begin with introducing yourself and your band for the readers that hasn't heard about Leviathan?
Wrest - Leviathan is me and me alone... I've been recording material as Leviathan since 1998.

How has the response been on your newest album "The Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide" and are you happy with how the album turned out?
Wrest - The response has been good, I guess… people seem to be listening to it a bit. I think as a whole, it's the most together (song structures, lyrics, notes, etc…) group of songs I've done. I think the guitar sounds are lacking and the drums are kinda buried. I do really like how loud the bass is.

When I listen to the album I can here some influences from early Burzum, do you agree with me on that point and has Burzum had an impact on you when it comes to writing music? What things (both musical and non-musical) have had the most impact on your music writing?
Wrest - Burzum had an impact on my entire life, but I'm tired of this comparison… it's soporific and boring.

The albums title is quite interesting; can you explain what you mean when you say that suicide has sub-levels? And what happens on the tenth sub level?
Wrest - The number is random…it's about different phases/levels of contemplation towards an action. The act of self-extermination.

Can you tell me a little bit about the lyrics on the album, are there any special theme they follow and where do you get your inspiration for the lyrics? Do you consider the lyrics to be an important part of your music?
Wrest - All the lyrics, for the exception of 2, are about suicide, in one form or another. Lyrics are important and also very hard for me… at times, the way things come out in words, sounds like nonsense. I don't consider myself a poet, by any means.

Have you ever run into some problems with your band name, since there are so many other bands with the same name as yours? I know about at least six other bands with the same name, of which three of them also come from USA.
Wrest - The existing 2 I know about are the Swedish B.M. deal and some gear-head rock act from Atlanta. If someone has a problem with it, they've never told me. I don't care anyway. Let them come to me.

You have released an impressive amount of material since 1998, when you founded Leviathan. How do you find the time to do write so much material and record it, don't you find it difficult to combine your everyday life (work, studies, family etc) with the work you have to put down on the music?
Wrest - Great periods of nothing but go to the job and work… come home and work, sleep, repeat. I've slowed down quite a bit in the past year or so.

Your deal with Tumult Records did not last long, was the contract only for the release of "Verrater" or did something happen between you and the label? You have now a contract with Moribund Records, how did you get in contact with them and are you happy with the cooperation? For how many albums do you have a deal?
Wrest - There are no contracts with Tumult… Andee is great and I appreciate his vision for Tumult… but he is not a metal label and wouldn't put things out as fast as I need. After "Verrater" I started sending demos around, Moribund responded first. They've put out some great records… Odin still loves and need raw underground devil music.


Do you play any live shows or will you keep Leviathan strictly as a one-man studioband? Do you have any thoughts about finding some more members to the band?
Wrest - No time right now. I would like to play live in the future.

I read in an old interview that you do tattoos, how did you start with that and do you have a shop of some sort? Any other interest of yours you want to tell the readers about?
Wrest - Yes, but I like to keep this very separate from Leviathan.

What are your plans for the future? When can we expect some new material to be released?
Wrest - There will be a split CD with Crebain, out on Tumult Records soon… "Tentacles Of Horror", the next Moribund disc will be out in the beginning of '04 and a split is in the works with Ad Hominem, from France, in '04.

And finally, a classical question. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Wrest - Paranoia!!!!!
