Broome County Gas Lease Deal is a Disaster: Threatens Parks, Individual Freedoms, and Our Common Wealth

July 16, 2010 by Anonymous

The Broome County legislature has been given an ultimatum: grant County Executive Barbara Fiala the authority to negotiate and sign a gas lease with a little known gas company or face a budget deficit that will require dramatic cuts to services and possibly a double-digit tax increase.

But there's much more to the gas lease deal that has gone unreported.

Slow Money: Sustainable Communities

July 4, 2010 by pegjohnston

The Slow Money movement is gaining enthusiasm in direct proportion to the falling stock market, the widening oil spill, and, believe it or not, the loss of top soil. It's this last indicator that has venture capitalist Woody Tasch most worried. His latest interest is investing in small organic farms to provide local food. Why? For all the obvious reasons but also because globally 1/2 of 1% of the world's topsoil is being lost every year, due to erosion, overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer. Organic farms put back nutrients into the soil to create top soil. They also create valuable social connections, local economies, and good food.

They will not, however, give you a huge return on your investment in terms of dollars and that's where slow money comes in. They believe that a 1 or 2% return (better than the banks) will create a more sustainable economy and that investors will be more connected to what they invest in.

For more information go to slowmoneyalliance.org or search Woody Tasch for recent interviews. And if anyone is interested in building a local slow money movement, please comment on this article.

A How-To Guide for Getting Your Own Cost of War Sign

June 1, 2010 by Anonymous

Members of the Broome County Cost of War Project want to thank all those near and far that have shown support for and expressed interest in emulating our awareness campaign. We have received letters of support from residents of nearly every state, two national veteran organizations (thanks IVAW and VFP!), and a couple in Japan. Your heartfelt correspondence has been inspiring and affirming. Thank you.

One common question we heard over and over: "How can I get a Cost of War Counter?" Well, here's a quick summary of what we did, and how easy it was. We wish you success in emulating and improving upon our efforts to raise awareness at the local level about the many tragic costs of war.

Green Party Nominates Clark and Lawrence for US Senate

May 28, 2010 by Broome County G...

The Green Party state convention in Albany on May 15 nominated a full slate of candidates for statewide office in New York this November, an affair that was given absolutely no local press, and very little attention statewide.

In addition to Gloria Matters for Lt. Governor, Howie Hawkins for Governor, and Colia Colark was Dr. Cecile Lawrence, a long-time local activist in the Broome County area and advocate for media reform.

The Limits of Liberalism

May 23, 2010 by Joe112

In 2006 I did something monumentally stupid, something that can only be chalked up to pure, unadulterated ignorance and the folly of youth. I voted. For a Democrat. And I did so -- wait for it -- under the impression I might be helping to end a war.

Elena Kagan and the Supreme Court: A Barnyard Smell in Chicago, Harvard and Washington

May 13, 2010 by imc-editor

By James Petras

President Obama has nominated Elena Kagan for Justice of the United States Supreme Court on the basis of an academic publication record, which might give her a fighting chance for tenure at a first rate correspondence law school in the Texas Panhandle.

A review of her published scholarship after almost two decades in and out of academia turns up four law review articles, two brief pieces and several book reviews and in memoriam. There is nothing even remotely resembling a major legal text or research publication.
