The games of 2007
Jan 30 2008
Allow us to take you through ELSPA/ChartTrack's full year format charts - with analysis on each...
1. Wii Play (Nintendo)
2. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Sega)
3. Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree (Nintendo)
4. Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo)
5. Mario Party 8 (Nintendo)
6. Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (Nintendo)
7. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo)
8. Mario Strikers Charged Football (Nintendo)
9. Sonic and the Secret Rings (Sega)
10. Resident Evil 4 (Capcom)
After spending the majority of 2007 at the top of the Wii charts, it’s no surprise Wii Play manages to cross the finishing line first for the year in full. Sega’s Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games also does well to take second place after a relatively late release. Meanwhile, Nintendo displays its dominance on the format, taking seven positions.
XBOX 360 TOP 10 ALL PRICES
1. Halo 3 (Microsoft)
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Activision)
3. Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft)
4. Forza Motorsport 2 (Microsoft)
5. FIFA 08 (EA)
6. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami)
7. Crackdown (Microsoft)
8. Gears of War (Microsoft)
9. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Capcom)
10. Bioshock (2K Games)
After having its launch voted the best moment of the year in the MCV Reader Survey, Microsoft’s Halo 3 takes gold medal. Meanwhile, despite the success of old faithful franchises Call of Duty, FIFA and Halo, original IP titles also fared well, with high positions for Bioshock, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Gears of War, Crackdown, and Assassin’s Creed.
PS3 TOP 10 ALL PRICES
1. Resistance: Fall of Man (SCEE)
2. Motorstorm (SCEE)
3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision)
4. FIFA 08 (EA)
5. Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft)
6. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami)
7. Formula 1: Championship Edition (SCEE)
8. Need for Speed: ProStreet (EA)
9. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (SCEE)
10. WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 (THQ)
Its first year of sales saw PS3 fans lapping up Sony’s original IP duo Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm. The PS3 shows here the adoption of the hardcore gamer away from its older brother, with titles such as Assassin’s Creed and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune performing well, while more family orientated titles miss the top ten.
DS TOP TEN ALL PRICES
1. Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training (Nintendo)
2. More Brain Training From Dr Kawashima (Nintendo)
3. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo)
4. Cooking Mama (505 Games)
5. Big Brain Academy (Nintendo)
6. Pokemon Diamond (Nintendo)
7. 42 All-Time Classics (Nintendo)
8. Nintendogs: Labrador & Friends (Nintendo)
9. Sonic Rush (Sega)
10. Zoo Tycoon DS (THQ)
For a second year running the phenomenon that is Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training tops the bill on the DS, closely followed by sequel More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima. Both logic-based quizzes serve as a good model to represent the strength of the handheld as a format, since the DS-only titles managed to take the second and fifth spot in the main charts.
PS2 TOP 10 ALL PRICES
1. FIFA 08 (EA)
2. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami)
3. The Simpsons Game (EA)
4. Final Fantasy XII (Square Enix)
5. High School Musical (Disney)
6. WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 (THQ)
7. Need for Speed: ProStreet (EA)
8. Spider-Man 3 (Activision)
9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (Rockstar)
10. Transformers: The Game (Activision)
Football titles rule the roost on the PS2, as it experiences its first year in a long time not being the best-selling format. The success of FIFA 08 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 in the All Format Charts is reflected here, while the console’s gradual retirement into more family friendly and film tie-in titles is also evident.
PSP TOP 10 ALL PRICES
1. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (Rockstar)
2. FIFA 08 (EA)
3. Sega Mega Drive Collection (Sega)
4. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (Konami)
5. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar)
6. Sonic Rivals (Sega)
7. The Simpsons Game (EA)
8. FIFA 07 (EA)
9. Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition (Rockstar)
10. Need for Speed: Carbon (EA)
Ahead of the release of the hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar’s GTA: Vice City Stories tops the PSP chart after claiming second place in the 2006 listings. Previous number one Liberty City Stories also does well to remain in the charts at number five. Overall, EA performed the best for the year, claiming four of the top ten games.
Check out the 50 top selling titles of 2007 here, and then head over to our in-depth analysis.
