Wii Fit tops UK charts

Second successive rise in sales as consumers vow to lose the Christmas pounds
As the UK's weight-loss centres and sports stores enjoy the revenue from thousands of people looking to put right their Christmas sins, Nintendo's Wii Fit has scaled to the top of the UK All Format charts.

Last week Nintendo's evergreen fitness title jumped to fourth place, up from twentieth the week prior. This week the software enjoys an 18 percent rise in sales, with supply levels at retailer outlets uncommonly able to meet the strong demand.

Meanwhile, the sales wrangle between FIFA 09 and Treyarch's World At War is over for the moment. While both titles have been swapping first and second positions in the charts since Christmas, FIFA 09 has dropped to fourth following a 35% decline in sales.

That fall in sales will not particularly trouble EA. The multiformat soccer sim was released in the beginning of October and has remained in the top five of the charts since then (save for one week in mid November). FIFA 09's decline in sales is inevitable as each week goes by, but the title has clearly sold above its projections, while its soccer sim rival - Pro Evolution 2009 - has hovered outside the top ten for weeks.

Treyarch's World At War remains in second, falling 18 percent in weekly turnover. The overall decline at the retailers, as reported last week, is due to consumers recovering from the Christmas shopping season, along with a lack of new games arriving.

Yet publishers may want to take a second look at the opportunity available in the January months. The only new entry to the entire top 40 is EA's The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, a game which has shot straight to third. A mere 2,500 sales separate Conquest from Wii Fit.

Elsewhere, the top ten sees the regular appearance of Wii Play, which hangs to fifth despite a 19 percent dip in sales. Meanwhile, EA's Need for Speed: Undercover is stung by a weekly sales plunge of 52 percent, taking the game from third last week to sixth. Sega's Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games remains in seventh, Guitar Hero falls two places to eighth, and Dr Kawashima Brain Training climbs three places to tenth, despite a sales fall of 17 percent.

All Format top-ten provided by Chart Track follows:

  1. Wii Fit
  2. Call of Duty: World at War
  3. The Lord of Rings: Conquest
  4. FIFA 09
  5. Wii Play
  6. Need for Speed: Undercover
  7. Mario and Sonic at they Olympic Games
  8. Guitar Hero: World Tour
  9. Carnival: Funfair Games
  10. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training

I wonder how many people will sue Nintendo when they realise Wii Fit doesn't actually help much if you're trying to lose weight.

This is astounding to me.
Still, I seem to recall Nintendo saying something themselves about 'evergreen games' - guess they were bang on the money...

You could almost guess the charts nowadays.

Seriously, who is still buying Wii play and Mario & Sonic @ the Olympic games?

If you currently do no excercise then Wiifit could help quite a bit with loosing some pounds. Some of the games really are quite active.

However I would like to know where on earth they are buying it from as I still can't find anywhere with stock!

i've lost a couple pounds on wii fit.

The sit ups and press up challenges are bloody grueling. it keeps going untill you collapse.

However there are much better games to use the balance board for. skate it and raving rabbids tv to name a couple.

Arse controls and a skate game that actually feels like you're on a board. can't be bad.

I would put Wii Play purely down to the free controller you get with it.

As for Wii Fit. It does work like WHERESMYMONKEY pointed out. It's all about doing the exercises properly and actually applying yourself correctly. My mate lost a stone from using it.

I could do with getting something that uses my Balance board apart from just Wii Fit.

that's a shit load of landfill... Someone should really ban Nintendo from making such polluting hardware that, lets be honest, will be gathering dust in about 2 months after purchase. Some days I am proud to be British. Some I'm not.

I use the wii fit a lot and so does my family. Ok so it might not do great wonders for everyone but it gets you started on the road to it and it is a bit of fun whilst also getting active. Nintendo never said it would work miracles and transform someone who is 25 stone to 10 stone but it is a helping hand on the road to that ideal weight.

Also I would like to point out that I myself have noticed a lot of difference already especially for the balance and the muscle toning.

Exactly, it's basically a controller with a few so so games for an extra fiver. It was fine by me, over the two years since I bought it, I've got plenty of fun out the games - albeit in 10/15 minute bursts. Which is the great thing about the wii.

And I've said it before, if someone buys a wii now they have a pretty good catalogue of games to work through assuming they don't buy them all at once. At least enough until decent games start rolling out again, hopefully starting with MadWorld.

Well done Nintendo for releasing games that the mass market buy. Nintendo is doing a fantastic job with an unbelievable ability to release software that the market wants and making massive profits.

Nintendo show Sony and Microsoft how it's done.

Respect.

Forget about Wii Fit and Wii Play, I'm more wondering how the hell Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training is still up there and selling. How much longer will it take before everyone has a copy?
