Report: ROBERT PLANT Says No To LED ZEPPELIN World Tour - Mar. 2, 2008
Sunday Mirror reports that Robert Plant has turned down an extra £100 million (approximately $200 million) fortune to take LED ZEPPELIN on a world tour.

The rock legend wants to concentrate on his new partnership with country singer Alison Krauss... spelling the likely end of the famous band.

A band source reportedly said: "Despite the enormous offer, the decision did not come down to money. They always said they would do the one-off show and then see how they felt. Jimmy [Page] had enjoyed the concert in December enough to want to tour. He argued they still had something to offer. He likes the idea of another chapter in the band — the grown-up tour. John [Paul Jones] sided with Jimmy. He loved making music with the others again. But Robert wanted to leave last year's concert as their legacy. They had proved they could still do it and that was enough. He has other commitments and is happier looking forward to those. Robert put the mockers on the tour."

This is the best thing that could happen. A reunion tour would be a cashgrab and a disgrace to the legacy of John Bonham. Zeppelin died with Bonham and everybody involved with the band should understand that. Beyond that it's pretty obvious that these guys don't have anything left in the tank. That tribute show to the Ahmet Zappa or whatever his name was an embarrassment. Plus they're always releasing greatest hits and DVDs and shit. Just let the legacy remain and stop trying to make all the money.

This woman is going to be the scapegoat for millions of Zep fans. The truth is that Plant doesn't want to reform Zeppelin - he'd rather walk the dog or wash the cat. But Alison Krauss is going to be seen in the same light as Yoko. Don't forget the crap that Candice Night gets, even though Blackmore wouldn't rejoin Purple anyway.

I've been following this band for my whole life, and I have a very good memory...don't listen to what anyone is saying, just watch for the tickets to go on sale and go about your business. Don't lose faith. If there's one thing for sure with these guys it's that you just never know.

When Bonham died, they all said they'd never perform a Zeppelin track again. A few years later, Page was playing an instrumental Stairway to Heaven at the ARMS show, then brought out the songs on the Outrider tour in 1988.

Robert Plant was adamant about not performing the songs, and distancing himself from the band. But in 1988, he loaded the Now and Zen tour with Zeppelin songs, and Jimmy guested on the album.

Jones was just about retired from rock...then came Zooma, and he broke out amazing instrumental versions of When the Levee Breaks and Nobody's Fault But Mine.

Page and Jones were close, and Robert was on the outside when Jones did the Scream for Help soundtrack. Then Page and Plant were REALLY on the outs, so Page made a disc with David Coverdale. Next thing you know, Page and Plant reunite to go on a world tour. Then Jones is at war with them at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...but there they were on stage as Zeppelin.

They said "never again" all along. But there was Live Aid, Atlantic Records, Jason Bonham's wedding and the 2007 reunion.

Give Robert Plant a chance to get the Allison Krauss project out of his system...it'll happen.

I've been listening to rumors for almost 30 years now...and they always said never again. But they've collaborated tons of times over the years, have fallen in and out of favor with each other...but somehow, something always happens.

Relax...have faith...give 'em time.

Go on tour, rock the planet, get laid, personally raise twenty million dollars for Iraqi kids who got their limbs blown off, and you will be Knighted by the Queen and go to heaven when you die. No, wait, wait.... do that country thing instead. Yeah, definitly... to that country thing with that chick. Totally. That's important too. When I was 16, I saw Whole Lotta Love on a programme about the top 100 albums ever. Lloyd Grossman, of all people, had Led Zep II as his favourite album. At that point I was listening to Britpop and Indie and stuff like that.

That 10 second clip prompted me to dig out all the old man's vinyl. Zep, Sabbath, the Who, Bad Company, Free, Yes, the list went on. If it wasn't for being exposed to that clip I would never have got into classic rock, which was then a gateway for metal.

I always respected them for not reforming. I haven't seen this last reunion but would definitely buy the DVD. However, whatever Plant's motives (and it's really misogynist and typically knuckle-headed of metal fans to claim 'he's nailing her') good for him. Even if he is nailing Krauss!

It's only music people. They don't owe anyone a duty. They don't owe anyone anything. Listen to his last three albums. Bombastic rock just isn't his thing anymore. And I agree with the comments that he would be crucified if he'd taken the offer, at least on this site. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Who cares?

cliffburt,

I agree with what you said where it gets a little confusing, throughout Plant’s solo career he always included Zeppelin songs in his live set and they never sounded nearly as good as when Led Zeppelin performed the songs although with the exception of the 02 the three surviving members did only perform together three times with sub par results.

I do know Plant was adamant about the 02 being the last Led Zeppelin gig. As we all know without John Bonham it never was quite Led Zeppelin anymore but in many ways I considered the remaining members more mature and professional and believe their approach to the 02 would’ve been similar if they had played together a few more times. Plant has stuck to his guns but he’s will be performing Black Dog and When the Levee Breaks with Alison Krauss that really blows. It’s tiring the Robert Plant side shows Honey Drippers, Strange Sensations etc. I don’t care to see or hear from him anymore. Although in my opinion a Led Zeppelin world tour shouldn’t never been considered in the first place, it wasn’t unreasonable for us to expect Plant, Page, Jones and Jason to play a few more times. Plant has screwed things up for Page and Jones since John Bonham died in and it’s time Led Zeppelin fans ditched him.

If they say they will never play again, people bitch because they want to see Zeppelin perform.

If they do a show but don't tour afterwards, people bitch because they didn't do enough performances.

If they do world tours, people bitch because it's disrespectful to Bonham, or it's greedy, or they don't sound good anymore.

It would be hard to distinguish between the two at this point. On one hand, the fans have spent millions already buying and investing in the legend that is Led Zep and for all rights deserve to see their band pump it out one last time. On the other hand, it would be a HUGE cashgrab for the band and all involved. If Peter Green were still alive, there would be a tour and it would be monumental. Probably the biggest in rock history taking in nearly a billion. Plant has a point but then again, why would he want to involve himself for a least the next year when many people will still buy his records and pay his bills for him. Personally, this is a shame that Zep won't tour. I would like to see them but since it isn't going to happen there's not much we can do about it.

I read a couple years ago that Pink Floyd denied a $300,000,000 offer to tour the world after that live8 gig.

I feel theres a decent chance that THIS news could be false. Jimmy Page recently said that the earliest zeppelin could come back was this September. Even that doesn't mean that he knows of anything and surely nothing seems final.

It's downright stupid to think that I could afford to get into a show like that. $125 would be too much for me to purchase even the best seats, certainly not the worst!

First off, Alison Krauss is the farthest thing from Yoko imaginable. Krauss can sing like an angel, is an incredibly accomplished songwriter, producer and instrumentalist.

She has an incredibly successful solo career with her band, Union Station, and in no way needs to ride Plant's coattails.

I urge you to check out her live DVD and witness not only the incredible musicianship and harmonies of her band, but also one of the most amazing musicians I've ever seen, dobro player Jerry Douglas. The guy is a MONSTER on his instrument.

Secondly, Robert doesn't need the money, and is completely within his rights to want to let the past be the past. Lastly, his voice is likely not up to the rigors of two hours of Zep songs every night. Why go out and not be able to deliver 100%?

I have tix to see Plant and Krauss in June, and I'm excited to see where this collaboration goes from here.
