Today marks the first anniversary of the death of Heath Ledger. The gifted Australian actor died in a New York City apartment on January 22, 2008 after an “accidental toxic combination of prescription drugs” at age 28. He is survived by his daughter Matilda Rose from his relationship with actress Michelle Williams.

Fittingly, and deservingly, Ledger was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker in the box-office smash The Dark Knight earlier today. He was previously nominated in the Best Actor category in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain. Ledger’s win for Supporting Actor seems like a guarantee, having already captured the category at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. “All of us who worked with Heath on The Dark Knight accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride. For any of us lucky enough to work with him, he will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten,” Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan told the audience at the Golden Globes as he accepted the award on Ledger’s behalf.

Ledger’s final film appearance, in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, is due out later this year. While Ledger’s death came halfway through the film’s production, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law helped fill in for Ledger’s role of “Tony.” Additionally, Ledger’s music video for Nick Drake’s “Black Eyed Dog,” which the actor also directed, will appear on an upcoming Drake tribute album. Dark Night and his Joker role were truley remarkable,,,,,,but, not half as good as his role in Brokeback Mountain,,,,,,,,,watch it if you have’nt yet.

Good actors come and go,,,,a few really shine. Heath was one of those really good ones.

And who gives a f#ck about an actors private life,,,,,so what if he did drugs or drank,,,,,have’nt most of us at one time? How does that take away from his awesome talent?

either someone is really anti-drug, or really likes pop stars. heath ledger was probably a fuck-up in his personal life, but someone clearly doesn’t appreciate good acting.

Ledger was an actor like no other. His role in the dark knight left me with frikin nightmares…never has a performance had that much impact on me. To think that such talent will never again be seen on the big screen…the loss will be remembered as one of the saddest in movie making. Giving him a posthumous oscar is the least they can do.

Heath Ledger had a serious drug problem. And it wasn’t a secret. But you won’t read about it in the pages of Entertainment Weekly or, for that matter, anywhere else — including Rolling Stone. You can read about the cover up at certainspeculation .com

Heath Ledger’s performance in “The Dark Knight” will forever be remembered. No one else could/can replace what energy he brought to the character (The Joker). He deserves to win Best Supporting Actor.
