Anthrax, Black Gold, Valiant Thorr, and Snowboarding
Have you always wanted to watch snowboarding in New York City to the tunes of Anthrax? Well now’s your chance:
On Thursday, February 5th, 17 of the world’s best snowboarders will compete for their piece of the massive $100,000 prize purse at Red Bull Snowscrapers. Athletes will compete against the majestic backdrop of the New York City skyline in the East River Park from 6-9 pm. The local thrash heavy metal band Anthrax is set to perform.
Athletes include iconic Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White, freestyle / backcountry legend Travis Rice and ultra-progressive phenomenon Pat Moore. World renowned Burton riders for the ground-breaking event include Kevin Pearce, Mikkel Bang, Danny Davis, Kohei Kubo, Kazuhiro Kakubo, and snowboard legend Terje Haakonsen. Other confirmed riders include Nitro’s Andreas Wiig, DC’s Torstein Horgmo, Forum’s Jake Blauvelt and Greg Bretz, along with Rome rider Bjorn Leines and Ride’s JJ Thomas.
Along with Anthrax, Valiant Thorr and Black Gold will also be playing. Black Gold’s new album Rush comes out on February 3 and after this show they will head out on tour with Lydia. They return to NYC to play the Mercury Lounge on March 5 and Maxwell’s on March 6. Check out their video for “Plans and Reveries” here.

Winter Jam NYC will feature a 70-foot long Snow Flume for sledding, a professional snowboarding competition on a 90-foot tall Snowscraper structure, a winter snowfield with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing*, a snowman making contest, a Warming Hut with free samples from NY State farmers and producers, performances from the high flying Skyriders, live music from artists such as Apollo Run and Dujeous, and plenty of fun activities for all ages! Winter Jam ‘09 is FREE, and all winter sports equipment will be provided, including tubes for sledding, snow shoes, and cross-country skis.
