Konami says Merry Christmas to Pentavision the best way they know how...
Posted by eddie - Wed 12/24 2008 - 12:40 PM - 2699 Views

In the form of a lawsuit.

Konami Digital Entertainment Korea has slapped Pentavision Ltd. with a copyright infringement suit over their DJMAX Videogame series. As per usual with Konami in their patent suits, they're seeking damages and the cease of manufacturing and distribution of the title. Not too surprising given how on fire Pentavision has been with the franchise as of late. Trilogy and Black Square both release this week, Fever is due out in the US on Jan. 27th, Technika has been doing very well in arcades. Figures Konami would want a piece of the pie.

I personally hope this either settles out of court, or that it doesn't move any further. I totally believe Konami is in the right for protecting it's patents, but with how long they've just looked the other way, you have to wonder if the franchises really can't peacefully co-exist. If we get anymore information regarding the suit, you'll be the first to know.

Wow... with X AC being terrible so far, X CS being terrible, HP2 being Terrible, Uni 3 having a bunch of problems, Empress feeling rushed, and now this? I really don't think this was the best time for Konami to slap them with a lawsuit since many fans aren't exactly happy with them at the moment...

Man what the fuck. I mean I can understand where Konami is coming from but this is still a dick move considering how long DJMax has been around :/

If this screws us out of Trilogy I'm going to kill someone.

Trilogy is out already, it should start shipping from Play-asia come the 29th. I doubt this lawsuit will hurt that. And so far from the looks of it, Fever is safe too.

With it being released in Korea should the US release be secure as well? I mean it's not like we can't play the Korean version but the US release was going to be awfully convenient.

The lawsuit is apparently only for Korea *knock on wood* so as it stands, anything PM Studios intends on releasing over here should still be safe.

Technika should be exempt from this, unless they try to claim it as a uBeat ripoff (haha not quite Konami.)

What ever happened to competition being a good thing for the gaming industry? Now it's all about how many different types of music games you can monopolize.

Pentavision has been taking steps to get away from Konami's patents for a while now as well, they knew something like this was a possibility. Technika wasn't really design with that entirely in mind, but the engine update in Black Square/Fever was something they did to move away from anything Konami could get them for. That's not to say that Konami doesn't still have a case, but Pentavision is doing everything they can to save the franchise.

I'm a huge fan myself, and I really hope that this case doesn't go anywhere.

Konami needs to learn that if they keep their games all to themselves in Japan and don't push them anywhere else, other people are going to try to make music games. With their sub-par recent Bemani releases (Though Empress is by far my personal favorite IIDX release), it's clear that they're more than just lazy now.

Don't count out any douchbaggery on Konami's part anymore, thats what i think. The way they're going now i'm not sure that care about their fans (or bemanistyle) like that used to anymore. I only have 2 questions for them if i see them at E3-

1. Does Jason Enos work here anymore?

2. When is corporate going to pull their stick out of their ass?

i hope another company like Blizzard buys the rights to MGS before Konami runs it into the ground. Or until Konami sues Tom Clancy for making Tactical Stealth Action games.

scottind: At least the IP rights to MGS, as far as they are concerned, are held by Kojima Studios, not Konami.

Honestly, it gets to the point where I begin to wonder if Konami is just getting jealous of other companies having success in a field they created and, for a long time, dominated.

That being said, it's not 1998 anymore... and Konami doesn't seem to know.

the best way to improve is a little rivalry.

So, let's get the list of what I know down.

Andamiro makes a popular dance game, Konami sues.
Amuseworld makes a DJ game similar to beatmania, Konami sues.
Roxor makes a dance game to cater to a group, makes a bad move in upgrade kits that fit Konami cabinets, Konami sues.
UDE adds new content to a game when moving to non-Asian terrorities, gets popular, Konami pulls contract, UDE sues.
Pentavision makes a popular DJ game similar but mechanically different from beatmania, Konami sues around 5 years after its creation.

I only have rhythm games and card games covered. Any that I missed?

EDIT: How did the Harmonix case work?

cj iwakura Posted by cj iwakura - Wed 12/24 2008 - 09:40 PM     [ quote ]
Konami's after Harmonix/EA/MTV/Viacom/etc. for Rock Band violating their GF patent, I think.

Supposedly Activision paid them for GH.

Not sure how that turned out, if it's even done yet, but I imagine Konami's going to lose, and badly.

I can only hope Pentavision can stand up to them just as well.

Konami has their rights and all, but this is just them trying to stop any company that makes a game capable of competing with theirs.

It's shameless, and I'm sick of it.

I don't think Pentavision ever made a dance game at all. I think this is a bad move for Konami but it's sort of understandable why certain companies got sued by Konami.

Just because we may be acting hypocritical (so you perceive it) doesn't mean they're right.

We're quick to act because that's how the internet works. The internet wouldn't be the internet if it weren't fast. We'd be phone conferences or telegraphs or something with a lesser form of instantaneous mass distribution.

Pentavision and Andamiro totally dominate Konami's production value and overall quality. JuBeat looks like a damn NES game compared to Technika.

I think we all know Konami's real aim here is to take-over the DJMAX franchise now that they know what the hype in the market is like, and most of the artists work has been done. Pentavision did a EXCELLENT job marketing all of their titles, most of us were all on the edge of our seats. Imagine Konami stealing the creative group's year-long hard work, because that's exactly what's going to happen here if this goes through.

I'm not buying any more Konami products (hell, I make my own Duel Monsters cards, lol). Konami's had plenty of time (or rather an EXUBERANT AMOUNT) to "test the waters." I'm sure they want in now, even if they have to do it by force. With a complete takeover, you know what to expect.. If that happends, God help us all..

God help us all.

I think Konami's real aim here is to take-over Pentavision now that they know what the market is like (they've tested the waters I'm sure by waiting this long).

Test the waters? Hahahahahahaha!

You're joking, right? Because THAT was a good one.

Otherwise, let me fill you in: In the Groove 2 DOMINATED the competition against Konami's DDR Supernova. Around a year later after the lawsuit, we now have a piece of shit known as DDR-X. Don't even get me started on their recent releases after ITG3 was successfully terminated, because those games were also a disaster!

Thank you, that is the point I was going to say. Having been to the TECHNIKA loctests at UCLA and AI, it's refreshing to see a foreign company pushing and making a decent effort to make a market among music gamers here in the US, something that Konami has failed to do on numerous occasions. I love Konami's games, but their sue-happy tactics to shut down competitors while at the same time refusing to put effort in their stateside releases is what I think is really pissing people off. If you're going to sue for IP, at least USE IT, Konami. It's like suing for one million and burning the money.

While this is pretty valid, Konami has done Korean releases of various Bemani games. I don't know if they still do, but it seems like they gave the market more of a chance than they gave the US.

Where's Konami's PSP DJ game? Where's Konami's not-shitty anything for US?

Hope they don't end up like Activision....

Konami would sue you all for playing other companies' games if they could get away with it.

Normally, I would be in the side of Konami in most of these lawsuits, but this time around, it won't be the case. Sure, the basic concept is similar, but the approaches are completely different. Heck, if they were to sue a rhythm game based on a similar concept to bm, they should have (and probably did) sue O2jam China for using Konami songs (among others) in an apparently commercial environment.

Apparently, the global recession is destroying the minds of various companies.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

wake me up when Konami isn't a power hungry money-leeching embarrasment of a company.

I think I'll be sleeping for a loooooong time.

Well only a few of Konami's games are any fun, but this just totally pissed me off, I finally get into DJ Max, and now theres a chance the US might not even get it, I'm sorry but thats just a big disappointment to me.

Oh great.......Konami realizes their losing money over their fail-train music game products so they decide to get rid of the competition anyway possible. Smooth move Konami....smooth.....

And here people wonder why I don't play Bemani games anymore (if I do, it's because I'm EXTREMELY bored). Either way it goes, I hope this doesn't fall through cause I'll be screaming bloody murder if it does.

In terms of Pentavision's games that they have designed in platform. I think they're really safe from Konami's lawsuit. I mean, there's from DJMAX Portable 1 all the way through DJMAX Black Square for PSP, and I haven't seen any of the PSP or PC game that Konami made. Even if a design group such as Ponglow, or there was some recruitment of bemani artists creating songs for some of the DJMAX Portable series (Son of Sun by Hosoe Shinji, for example) that's just their own decision of artwork submitted to Pentavision. Technika doesn't even match with any of the beatmania arcade system. Touchscreen music rhythm game is what makes Technika unique, and I just don't understand what Pentavision's products or concepts that goes along with Konami's known as "patented" ideas.

Konami shouldn't bully other companies, and should try working on their own products (especially without adding shitty songs and glitches and such). Although I liked the DDR series up to the Supernova 2 ones. Can't say how horrible are the lastest games and arcades about Konami though.

Back when Konami dropped the lawsuit bomb on the Rock Band folks I said I wasn't going to buy any more Konami games. I haven't since and don't plan to anytime soon. This just gives me another reason not to buy.

This is just pure crap, plain and simple. I can't say much about it that hasn't already been said. I still play ITG2 on a regular basis...DDR feels so old by comparison, even the so-called new ones. They can't innovate any more. They've totally lost it. And it's not just Bemani either. I can't believe they tried to make a Castlevania fighting game.

Now that MGS4 is out, they don't have any more big releases upcoming, so they're going to try to stay in business any way they can...except for actually releasing a whole bunch of great new games.

Fuck you, Konami.
