Plano's Burkhead takes time, picks Nebraska
03:33 AM CST on Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Plano's Rex Burkhead committed to play football for Nebraska, ending a long and thorough process for one of the area's most high-profile recruits.
Burkhead (6-0, 205) said Nebraska wants him as a running back. He played several positions, and Rivals.com ranks him No. 11 nationally among all-purpose backs.
"I think it's a great fit, because they use their running back so much," said Burkhead, who committed Monday night.
"It's kind of a running back university. They use them so much in the passing game and the running game. They try to get the ball in the running back's hands."
Last summer, Burkhead said he was considering nine schools. He said his final four were Nebraska, Stanford, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. He visited Nebraska three times.
"Throughout this whole process, I just kind of felt that was the place for me," Burkhead said. "I just wanted to make sure. I took some visits to other schools after I took that first visit to Nebraska. I'm going to be there the next four years of my life, so I wanted the decision to be the right one."
Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a 2009 football recruit can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 4.
Burkhead rushed for 1,762 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior. He also caught 42 passes for 594 yards and five touchdowns and excelled at returns.
Burkhead was visited Monday by Nebraska assistants Tim Beck and John Papuchis. Then he called coach Bo Pelini to deliver the news.
