Interests & Hobbies

Living in the south, I play a lot of golf in my free time. Although, with the recent birth of my first child, I think my golf bag may take a backseat and be usurped by a diaper bag.

Why did you choose Meterology?

I chose weather as a career because I have always found it compelling. It has kept me engaged and interested for 15 years. But, today, more than ever, I am fascinated by it. The evolving climate coupled with the increased fascination by the public and our ever expanding bank of knowledge has me more captivated than ever.

What would you like to know about Alexandra Steele?

Q: What are your favorite vacation spots?

A: I am an explorer by nature so the wilder and more foreign the better. I have traveled to Asia twice in the last two years and have fallen in love with its climate and culture. From the dichotomy witnessed on the streets in mainland China, where rickshaws abut luxury cars, to the urban pace of life in Bangkok, Asia is teeming with excitement and change and I loved witnessing it.

Q: What advice would you give to someone seeking a career in meteorology?

A: I took a very circuitous route in my quest to become a meteorologist. I was a History of Art and Architecture major at Brown University and then received a masters in Journalism from Northwestern University in Chicago before finding my way to weather. I always tell aspiring meteorologists to go straight to Penn State as an undergraduate and get it done right out of the gate!!

Q: What type of music do you enjoy listening to? What are some of your favorite artists/bands?

A: I love music of all kinds. I always wanted to write my college thesis on music and the mind and how music has such a direct impact on our mood. I never did that, but I do believe it is true. I love everything from classical, especially Puccini, to country and from The Counting Crows to classic rock.

Q: What were some of the jobs you held prior to starting your career in weather?

A: Prior to starting my career in weather, I had been working in television. I lived abroad and worked for ABC News in their London Bureau. Prior to my move abroad, I was working in New York City at ABC's morning show, 'Good Morning America'.

Q: What sports or physical activities do you play or participate in?

A: I have always loved playing sports. I play golf, tennis and I ski. For me, the beauty of golf often lies in the topography of the golf course. From The Ocean Course at Sea Island, Georgia, to the mountain courses of Colorado, the undulations of the greens and the beauty of the outdoor scene, drive my driver and my interest in the game.
