CENSUS RETURNS
1841, 1851, 1861 & 1881

The 'Population Act' of 1821 allowed for a certain small amount of information to be collected in relation to the number of occupants of the respective parishes, but not names of families. The return for Kirkcudbrightshire, with such expanded information as was available for Buittle Parish is noted here for comparison purposes.
1821 Census Return: Stewartry of Kirkcudbright.

The census returns, which contain detailed information on individual residents in Buittle Parish, carried out in the years 1841, 1851 and 1861 respectively, are reproduced here.

In addition, they have also published the pre-1855 monumental inscription from Buittle Churchyard. Click here to go to their web site from where their books can be ordered direct.

1861 CENSUS RETURN

The 1861 census added an invaluable feature to the returns.  On this occasion the number of rooms in each house with one or more window was also included. This gives an indication of the quality of housing then available.  There are a couple of houses listed with no windows, and many with only one.
Again I have produced the list in order of residence name, as follows:
Part One - Allan Bank to How Glen
Part Two - Isle to Woodhead. including Palnackie
Hint: If you are looking for individual surnames, use your browser's 'Find' facility once you download the page.

1881 CENSUS RETURN

This list is produced in order of residence name, as follows:
Part One - Allanbank to Kirkstyle
Part Two - Leaths to Woodhead, including Palnackie
