Blogging is the best alternative to creating a website from scratch. Any platform will do (but I recommend Blogger because CSS customisation is free). When you've got finances in hand just grab a domain name and you've got a site to your own name !
Good day all. Hope the new year has been good to you. It certainly has been a busy start for me. I didn't intend to mothball this site, but with one thing after another, well, you know how it is.
Anyway, I'm back after a period of holiday bliss, and the first thing I have to do, I suppose, is to tie up the loose ends from last year. We had an active period at the tail end of 2008 with charity events and contests and such, so I do owe you reports, big thanks, and to some, prizes.
Splashing Charity Car Wash (Dec 13 & 14, 2008)
The charity event was a success as far as car/visitor turnouts and tickets sales are concerned, but we were a little disappointed by the lack of volunteers. We had a total of eight volunteers among AMBP members who showed up for the two-day event. That left us seriously short on numbers, but thankfully, we managed to get our colleagues, friends and family members to help out, and pulled through rather well in the end.
In total we managed to collect RM4500 from ticket sales. That's an estimated figure by the way, as I've yet to receive the final numbers from Hospis Malaysia. Will update this space when I get it.
As for the car wash itself, well, let's just say that it wasn't a walk in the park for the volunteers. It was more like a swim in the waterpark. Heh.
Still, both the volunteers and visitors had plenty of fun. Just about everybody got wet. There were tired but cheerful faces everywhere and while the weather threatened a number of times to spoil the party on both days, it didn't, and we came out of it with a wonderful sense of achievement.
My thanks to ALL the volunteers, whether you're a blogger, a representative of a sponsor, a Hospis Malaysia volunteer, a friend, family or colleague. You made this a success. You made the difference.
The objective of the project was to raise funds to buy back-to-school material for 100 underprivileged kids aged six to 15. Thanks to your efforts, we managed to raise enough funds (amounting to RM5793.75, as of Dec 25) to buy a 'full pack' each for 40 kids.
Each 'full pack' contained a pair of school uniforms (with socks and shoes), a school bag, some notebooks, a pencil box, and stationery (2B pencils, pens, eraser, ruler, scissors, glue, sharpener, pencil colours, highlighters and oil pastels).
The folks from Rotaract Club have handed over the items to the kids at Rumah WAKE and SJKT Cheras in time for the new school term. I made the Dec 20 trip to Rumah WAKE as well, and while we weren't encourage to take pictures of the kids, we did manage to capture a few shots of the home (view Photo Gallery), where the caretakers organised a little lunch do for us.
All and all, you could say we're very happy with how this one turned out. My sincerest gratitude and thanks go out to everyone who played a part in this project.
UIP Caption Contest: Winners List
We ran a caption contest in conjunction with Project Gift a Kid to give you a chance to win something for yourself while doing some good. Y'know, two birds and all. Anyway, it took us some time to go through the entries; but we've finally done with that, so here are the winners for the UIP Caption Contest:
If your name isn't listed above, well don't fret. See if it's below, 'cos if it is, congrats! You've either won yourself GnR's lastest album Chinese Democracy + a T-Shirt, or just the T-Shirt.
Here’s a personal invitation to each and every AllMalaysian Bloggers Project (AMBP) member.
The AMBP is supporting the Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur (RACKL) in their efforts to raise funds to buy back-to-school material – books, stationery, uniforms etc - for underprivileged kids aged 6-15, and we’re going to require your help to do so.
The beneficiaries of Project Gift A Kid will be the children from Rumah WAKE 1, as well as those from Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan (Tamil) Cheras.
Now what is it that you can do, we hear you ask? Well, plenty.
Go tell it on the mountainThe project will benefit more kids if more people come forward as sponsors, and in order for that to happen, we’ll need to get the word out. The more people know about this project, the higher the likelihood that someone would act on it (y’know, percentages being percentages and all).
So, yes, we want you to help us spread the word. We want you to tell your friends, families, friends’ families, and family members’ friends. We want you to not only blog about Project Gift A Kid, but to shout it out on your blog!
Send a child a gift of movies! And what’s more? By blogging about this project, you’ll also send a kid to the movies (besides helping them get their back-school-material, that is).
How? Well, we’ve roped in the good folks from Universal International Pictures (UIP) who have agreed to sponsor a limited number of movie tickets, from which we’ll sponsor one kid to the movies for each blog entry written by AMBP members until all tickets are exhausted.
Win something for yourself too There’s also a chance for you to win yourself some awesome prizes courtesy of UIP and EMI if you add BELOW your post on Project Gift A Kid your entry for the UIP Caption Contest.
As I mentioned in my last post, the AMBP is poised to have two charity-based events, one of which is already in motion and has been unimaginatively titled Splashing Charity Car Wash in aid of Hospis Malaysia which is well, a charity car wash organised to raise funds for Hospis Malaysia.
We called for volunteers for this little project but, alas, while the names are slowly trickling in (bless you dearies), it's coming in a little too slow for our liking, and it's a bit worrying.
See, to make this two-day charity drive work we're going to need at least 20 volunteers on each of the days concerned. And that's cutting it close. So, c'mon dear bloggers, register as a volunteer. It's the season of giving after all, so help us, well...give.
Stuff to win
Speaking of the spirit of giving, you've got to admit, the AMBP is very fond of giving you stuff. Or at least, we try our best to allow you to win stuff. Like say, this brand new competition we're running called BOLT Caption & SMS Contest. Yeah, we know, it's unimaginatively titled too. But the point is, we're trying our best to give you stuff.
"Stuff" like tickets to the very movie this contest is supposed to promote: BOLT. And also goodies from this Mouse House offering, like wristwatches and stamping sets and notebooks.
To know what you have to do to win these goodies, and to see images of the stuff you could end up winning, visit the BOLT Contest Page. Oh, and to entice you even further, here's the unofficial official trailer to the movie.
Cute, eh?
More stuff to win: Music CD Giveaway
"The Most Anticipated Rock Album of The Year!", screams the poster. It probably is, what with Axl and buddies taking their time - 17 years to be precise - to fine-tune Guns N' Roses's sixth studio album Chinese Democracy.
But was it worth the wait? Well, why don't you find out by winning yourself a copy.
We have five copies of the album in our safekeeping for you to take home. To add to that, we're also giving away ten consolation prizes in the form of GnR T-shirts.
Now, how awesomely giving are we? ;-)
You know the drill:
1) Answer this question: What's the name of Guns N' Roses's sixth studio album? Is it a) Chinese Democracy; b) American Supremacy; or c) Malaysian Bureaucracy?
2) Post up this pic:
And
3) Write something - anything! - about Guns N' Roses.
...all on your blog. Then send the link to that particular blog post as a comment here. Closing date is on Dec 25, Christmas Day. Ho, ho, ho.
Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, or the day after that: Details on Project Gift A Kid.
Remember when I wrote a post back in July, informing you that we were thinking of organising more charity-based events, asking you if you'd be interested to volunteer your time and energy for a good cause? Well, a number of you wrote back, saying that you'd be psyched if we actually went ahead and set up such an event.
Well, we're going to do just that and what's more, we're organising not one, but two such events, and just in time for the season of giving at that.
The first of these, is a two-day fundraising initiative called AMBP Splashing Charity Car Wash, in aid of Hospis Malaysia. It'll take place at a Kia Service Centre along Old Klang Road (Leo Auto Services) on Dec 13 and 14.
We'll be selling tickets prior to the event, the profits of which will make a real difference to the lives of those affected by life-limiting diseases/ailments. Each ticket is priced at RM20 and the bearer is entitled to the following services:
Car wash and vacuum on the above dates
A FREE 18 point inspection
FREE labour for cars that carry out Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
Now, as a volunteer, you will be assigned to certain tasks on the day(s) in question, including getting your hands dirty (or rather, clean), washing cars.
For your time and effort, you will receive a goodie bag, and be eligible to enter the special Lucky Draw that we've cooked up. Light refreshments will also be provided.
One other way you can help is by getting the word out. Write about it on your blog. Tell your friends and family about it. Go stand in the middle of a busy shopping mall, get everyone's attention and announce it. Just don't get arrested on our account.
That said, do try your best to make it as a volunteer. Trust us, this will be fun. Just look at it as a gathering for bloggers, with lots and lots of soapy water.
Oh, as for the second charity event I mentioned earlier, you'll have to check back; I'll announce it in a day or two.
