Super Bowl Memories: Super Bowl XII
The Tribune is counting down the 31 remaining days until Super Bowl XLII at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale with a memory from each Super Bowl.
Super Bowl XII
When: Jan. 15, 1978
Where: Louisiana Superdome; New Orleans
Score: Dallas 27, Denver 10
Defining moment: Dallas receiver Butch Johnson made a spectacular diving catch of Roger Staubach’s pass for a 45-yard touchdown, the telling blow in the Cowboys’ victory.
Quotable: “It seemed as though (Denver quarterback Craig) Morton was looking at me every time he came to the line. I think he was more concerned because he thought all of us would be coming at him. I guess we might have shocked a few people.” — Dallas’ Harvey Martin, who was co-MVP with fellow defensive lineman Randy White.
Lasting impact: This Super Bowl, the first to be played indoors and the first at night, made the Cowboys the fourth two-time Super Bowl winner.
