Having selected the young singer AySel to represent Azerbaijan in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in January, the national broadcaster Ictimai TV launched an open call for songs suited to their representative shortly afterwards. Today, it was announced that AySel will sing Always in Moscow, a song written by the famous Iran-born artist Arash.

In the middle of January, an expert jury had decided that 19-year old AySel should represent Azerbaijan in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. In order to find the right song for her, an open call was directed to both national and foreign songwriters to send in their proposals. After the deadline, the national broadcaster Ictimai TV had received a total of 30 songs, which a seven-member expert jury had to evaluate. In the end, they unanimously voted in favour of Always, a song written by Arash.

Arash is an Iran-born singer and songwriter living in Sweden nowadays. He released his first album in 2005, which went gold in several European countries. In a recent interview, Arash confessed that he was a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and he would have loved to perform on stage himself, too. His song Always was described by one of the jury members as romantic and perfectly suited both to the Eurovision Song Contest and AySel's personal style. So far, the song itself has not been presented to the public, as it yet needs to be recorded and arranged.

Azerbaijan will take part in the Second Semi-Final of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, to take place on May 14th in Moscow. Stay with us for more information on the official presentation of the Azerbaijani entry!

I am very glad to know that Arash has composed a song for Azerbaijan. And I'm sure it will take the first place this year. Who knows, maybe next time Arash himself will represent his native country Azerbaijan in Eurovision Song Contest. And I hope the next ESC will take place in Baku.

.... Please follow the below link and you will find that Sefevid dynasty in Iran's history was founded by an Azerbaijani Shah Ismail Khatai and Iranian Empire does not totally mean Persian Empire. Many Shahs of Iran were Azeris. Former Prezident of Iran was also Azeri.
Shah Ismail was also a poet who wrote in Azerbijani language. One should not connect Iranian history only with Persians. Because many Azeris died saving Iran.
And believe many those who say I am Persian will say I am Azeri as Azerbaijan gets more popular.

His surname is Lavabzadeh.
There are many Azeris with the surnames ending in -zadeh: Lutfizadeh - founder of Fuzzy Logic Theory, Aziza Mustafazadeh - Jazz player and singer, Samir Javadzadeh, Aysel Teymurzadeh etc.
In his interview in Baku he himself said: My Father's father was an Azerbaijani.
More than half of the population of Iran are Azeris. And it is also a normal case when there are mixed Azeri-Persian families...

No, I have friends here in sweden that are friends to Arash since childhood, and he always says he is "iranian", so don't tell me that he is azerbaijani, he was born i Tehran, Iran , and always says in swedish and english interviews that he is "iranian" or persian.

But he helps Azerbaijan is another thing, I mean many people in the north of Iran are from azerbaijani heritege from the Persien Empire.

Arash gave the interview for a newspaper regarding this Eurovision and stated that he is of ethnical Azerbaijani descent. There are over 20 million Azeris live in Iran, that is 1/3 of population of Iran ethnical Azeris. Safavid Empire was ruled by Turkic-speaking Azeris and the whole military of that period consisted of Turkic speaking Azeris as well as other Turkic groups. So, there is no surprise that Arash is of Azeri descent, considering that many other famous Iranians are also ethnical Azeris (for example, see Googoosh and half of the Iranian national soccer team).

No matter who Arash is (Persian or Azeri), I still like him as a singer and a performer and proud to see him representing Azerbaijan!

You better know what great Russian Poet Pushkin said about you after he had a chance to find out what you hide inside yourselves. I sure sooner or later Europe and Entire World will find out about the same. because at the beginning we Azeris also were deceived by you.

Arash is persian, born in Tehran and later moved to Sweden. He isn't azerbaijani, he is Persian! Get your facts right before you make a comment.

Dear Doost, actually Arash was born in Iran, but he has Azerbaijani roots. Don`t forget that the biggest part of Azerbaijan with its capital city Tebriz (i mean south part), is under protectorate of Islamic Iran right now. Therefore 30 mln. Azerbaijani people live there :-)))
I wish all the best to our great participants AySel and Arash! I hope they will take the 1-st place on Eurovision 2009 and bring the competition to Azerbaijan!
