Having selected the young singer AySel to represent Azerbaijan in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in January, the national broadcaster Ictimai TV launched an open call for songs suited to their representative shortly afterwards. Today, it was announced that AySel will sing Always in Moscow, a song written by the famous Iran-born artist Arash.
In the middle of January, an expert jury had decided that 19-year old AySel should represent Azerbaijan in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. In order to find the right song for her, an open call was directed to both national and foreign songwriters to send in their proposals. After the deadline, the national broadcaster Ictimai TV had received a total of 30 songs, which a seven-member expert jury had to evaluate. In the end, they unanimously voted in favour of Always, a song written by Arash.
Arash is an Iran-born singer and songwriter living in Sweden nowadays. He released his first album in 2005, which went gold in several European countries. In a recent interview, Arash confessed that he was a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and he would have loved to perform on stage himself, too. His song Always was described by one of the jury members as romantic and perfectly suited both to the Eurovision Song Contest and AySel's personal style. So far, the song itself has not been presented to the public, as it yet needs to be recorded and arranged.
Azerbaijan will take part in the Second Semi-Final of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, to take place on May 14th in Moscow. Stay with us for more information on the official presentation of the Azerbaijani entry!
