Eagles of Death Metal Interview - Part 1

Posted by parker on 01/22 at 01:55 PM

Jesse Hughes is a rock devotee in the sense of a practicing Buddhist partaking in Kung-Fu exercises of agility and strength. He knows rock ‘n roll as lifestyle and posture, more than an abstract musical genre. Hughes, and his absent partner Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss fame), have crafted an ode to the caricature of c*ck-rock started by Jagger and his ilk decades ago. In their third studio album, Heart On, they continue the slippery slide into tongue-n-cheek debauchery with a side of stoner riffs and rolls.

Our very own Matsen caught up with Hughes not long ago at the infamous Bowery Ballroom in downtown Manhattan. What follows is part one of a hilarious and very rock n’ roll interaction.

Posted by Beasley on 12/17 at 04:07 PM

In the mold of Jimmy Eat World or The Fray, Jack’s Mannequin crafts good-times piano pop/rock and gets it stuck in your head. Fronted by former Something Corporate singer Andrew McMahon, the band embarked on a multi-city tour in the fall of ‘08 in support of their second album The Glass Passenger. The band hooked us up with a set of behind-the-scenes videos detailing life on the road, and today we bring you the first of five. Join Casper, tour manager on the Hammers and Strings tour, as he goes on a walkabout of Night Dancer, Jack’s Mannequin’s tour bus.

Check back next week for video #2.

Top 11 Albums of 2008

Posted by Beasley on 12/12 at 05:40 PM

Here it is, our year-end list, compiled in a semi-logical manner of tallying votes cast by UGO’s editorial team. If you disagree, well, maybe you should go read IGN.

image
11: Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath

More mindscrambling soundscapes, thundering riffs, screeching ceaseless solos and vocal dexterity from the prog/metal/latin jazz/hardcore fusion band on Bedlam, the only album on the list inspired by sessions on a Ouija board purchased in Jerusalem.

10: The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

Not cohesive enough? Maybe. But, there’s not a more talented duo in rock and roll than Brendan Benson and Jack White. When Benson’s pop sensibility is combined with White’s howling bluesmanship, an outburst of excellence results. Press play anywhere. They’ve done it again.

Vision of Disorder at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza – November 16, 2008

Posted by Greg Prato on 12/11 at 03:41 PM

Vision of Disorder

Nowadays, hardcore and metal go hand in hand - just like a delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich. However, back in the good ol’ days, both genres did not coexist - as territorial lines were clearly drawn in the sand. But thanks to such bands as New York’s Vision of Disorder (aka V.O.D.), the world is now a happier place, as hardcore-metal is now a thriving and immensely popular style. Although V.O.D. never truly reaped the rewards of their trailblazing - they split up in 2001 - the group has been continuously name-checked by other up-and-comers as an important influence (just give a listen to such releases as 1996’s self-titled release, and especially 1998’s ‘Imprint,’ for the sonic proof).

The group - singer Tim Williams, guitarists Matt Baumbach and Mike Kennedy, bassist Mike Fleischmann, and drummer Brendon Cohen - have sporadically reunited for live shows since their split, one of which was filmed for the just-released live DVD, ‘Dead in New York’ (released via Koch Entertainment). And to support the DVD’s release (and also news of the group beginning work on a new studio album, due next year), V.O.D. performed a headlining gig at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza.

Check after the jump for pictures of the show.

Powderfinger - Dream Days at the Hotel Existence - Album Review

Powderfinger - Dream Days at the Hotel Existence
Powderfinger - Dream Days at the Hotel Existence

Vitals
Label: Dew Process/Fontana
Release Date: November 11, 2008

The Who: Ask a well-versed U.S. rock fan what a ‘Powderfinger’ is, and probably the most common response would be “It’s the title of a semi-obscure Neil Young song [off of Rust Never Sleeps].” But in the land down under, Powderfinger is the name of a rock band that has become a commercial sensation - racking up hearty album sales and awards since 1994. Their sixth album overall, Dream Days at the Hotel Existence, sees the usual five-man line-up augmented by long-time Tom Petty keyboardist Benmont Tench, and was originally issued in their homeland all the way back in June of 2007, but is just now getting its release stateside.

Interview: Alex Lifeson (Rush)

Posted by Greg Prato on 12/11 at 03:23 PM

Alex Lifeson of Rush

It’s no secret that over the years Rush has had its fair share of detractors - namely, in the music press. But the veteran Canadian group - which has long consisted of singer/bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer/lyricist Neil Peart - certainly has gotten the last laugh, as they are still scoring hit albums and selling out arenas worldwide, nearly 35 years after the release of their self-titled debut. Recently, Rush has issued their latest live DVD, Snakes & Arrows Live, which chronicles a pair of sold-out shows at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on October 16 and 17, 2007, and features a heaping helping of classics, album cuts not played in eons, and newer material. Lifeson recently gave UGO the scoop about the DVD, as well as Rush’s future plans.

Interview with Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth)

Posted by Greg Prato on 12/11 at 11:43 AM

Musical trends may come and go, but you know you can always count on Iced Earth and their long-time leader, songwriter/guitarist Jon Schaffer, to offer epic metal when you need it most. And on the recently-released ‘The Crucible of Man: Something Wicked Part 2,’ Iced Earth delivers again, as they wrap up a storyline that began with their 2007 release, ‘Framing Armageddon: Something Wicked Part 1,’ and managed to do so with a singer change between both albums (former Judas Priest singer Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens went bye-bye, and in came former Iced Earth singer Matt Barlow for another go-round). Schaffer recently took time out to discuss Iced Earth’s latest release, and their long and winding career.

UGO: Let’s start off with the latest album, ‘The Crucible of Man: Something Wicked Part 2.’

Jon Schaffer: Well, the second part of the ‘Something Wicked’ saga was recorded at the same time that ‘Framing Armageddon’ was - the first part. I wrote all this stuff from February 2006 until February 2007 - that’s when we started cutting drum tracks, because I had finalized all 35 or 36 songs, whatever it was. So basically, all of this was by design. ‘Framing Armageddon’ has more of an ethereal/world instrument/tribal sort of vibe - because of the way the storyline is. And ‘Crucible’ gets very dark - that’s because ‘Crucible’ opens with the birth of the main character in the story, Set Abominae. He is the antichrist to mankind, but the savior to his own race. So it’s fitting that it’s very dark, and like I said, it was done by design. It was all done in the same three-month period. The only thing that was done later was I had to finish up some of the lyrical duties after about six or eight months of touring ‘Framing Armageddon.’ But all of the recording process was done at the same time.
