MATCH REPORT
Bolton achieved a remarkable sequence
of Wembley triumphs, winning the Finals of 1923,1926 and 1929, and, even
more remarkable, achieved it with largely the same set of players.
As in their last Final, Bolton allowed
the initiative to come from the opposition for most of the first half.
But Portsmouth's Weddle, with his reputation as a forward with a
scorching shot, was well policed by Finney, and half time arrived with
no score. Bolton resumed with more urgency, and launched a series of
fierce attacks. Gilfillan was peppered with shots from Gibson,
M'Clelland and Blackmore.
During this period of second‑half
pressure from Bolton, Portsmouth left‑back Bell was injured, and, after
attention, switched to outside‑left. The cohesion of the Portsmouth team
was broken as a result, and Butler, a fiery and determined winger, cut
inside to shoot Bolton into the lead with ten minutes to go. Mackie
hacked the ball clear a fraction too late ‑ it had already crossed the
line.
In the last seconds Bolton made sure
of victory with a second goal. Butler broke away to cross to Blackmore
who promptly and characteristically cracked it left‑footed into the net
before Gilfillan could move.
