25th January, 2009 Bengalore: On Sunday, the 25th of January, Bharatiya Gorkhali Welfare Association held its Biennial General Meeting at the CQAL Community Hall in North Bengalore. Among other listed agenda for the meeting, the election of office bearers was held, and saliently, the formal induction of the Youth Wing was announced.
The Youth Wing of BGWA comprises largely of young professionals from the corporate world and as well as students and professionals from the unorganised sectors. Till date, amongst the notable initiatives of the Youth Wing,is the historic first of its kind "Gorkha Saanjh", a magnum opus highlighting the cultural heritage of the Gorkhas in Bangalore, and more recently, "Aashwas", a career counseling project launched with the objective of providing timely and concerted counseling and mentorship for students and professionals alike.
During the BGM, the Youth Wing also launched its insurance project, "Sahayog". Sahayog attempts to achieve its objective of insuring all members of the Association. In this regard, drawing from the proceeds of Gorkha Saanjh, an initial batch of 25 students and professionals were handed over their accident / health insurance policies. During the BGM, the Association also showered its appreciation and encouragement of distinguished students and sportspersons, in which, a 3rd year student from Christ College, Tshering Wangdi Yolmo, was felicitated. Tshering hails from Daali, Darjeeling, and has achieved the unique distinction of procuring calls from all the IIMs across the country, in his attempt to secure an MBA from the esteemed institute. He is also a member of the Cultural Team of Christ College.
The newly elected BGWA and Youth Wing committee members vowed to take initiatives to provide welfare, fosterage of social and cultural bonding, and advancement of the community in general in line with their vision of a united and progressive Gorkhali
In the year 2009, the Youth Wing also proposes to continue achieving a series of firsts - notably, in concurrence with Pahilo Baishak, a Gorkha Mela in Bengaluru, and under the aegis of Aashwas, scholarhips for primary students.
