This Wednesday: 3 on 3 NHL Arcade on XBLA
Lace up your skates and grab a stick, because EA's over-the-top hockey game, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, is this week's Xbox Live Arcade release. Fetching the tidy sum of 800 ($10), EA's title features more than just big heads, as it promises a "no rules, fast paced" version of the popular sport. Planning to hit the ice this Wednesday?

hmmm sweet i will try out the demo. we will see about a purchase though. anyone already tried this out? i am assuming it was on some other system at one point.

This game's mechanics look kind of fun. I might buy it if I didn't despise hockey in any form, but regardless it doesn't look very impressive. Certainly not enough to warrant then dollars that I could spend on candy.

This came out on PSN last week. I tried the demo but it was a bit overwhelming considering they give you about 5 seconds to look at the offense controls, then flip to the defense controls for another 5 seconds, repeat x1000. Hated it. Not saying it's crap, but it's definitely not very intuitive.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 10th 2009 2:45AM
Unless you use skill stick, it doesn't even break down the controls by offense and defense during game load. It shows both at once.
Deaddy @ Feb 10th 2009 2:50AM
All I know is I gave the demo a shot, tried to read the controls before I started, and it wouldn't let me look at them for more than 5 seconds at a time. What a crappy design.

Yeah not only that, but there are other controls that they don't even mention at all. Did you know that the right stick lets you deke? I didn't, just figured it out recently. I'm pretty sure theres a turbo button mapped somewhere too. It just pisses me off that that they can't put an option to view the controls. Hopefully they'll wise up and patch that in.

There's an option to view the controls.
At the main menu or in the pause menu:
Go under "help and options", then select "controls". You can select regular or skill stick controls (very complex) with right and left on the D-pad. This shows the controls as buttons, you can see the O and D controls separately.
When starting a game, you select your controller right right and left (blue and red side), and switch between viewing button or skill stick controls with Y (I assume it's Y, it's triangle on PS3).

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into that. Here's the strange thing though. I was using the regular control set when I was using the right stick to deke. Does this mean that I am actually switching between two separate control schemes, or is it all one big control set up that allows you to play the game as complex as you want to? If there's two separate schemes, there's no reason why they shouldn't have put "right stick = deke" in there. Thanks again for all the help.
Jambi_Bum @ Feb 10th 2009 7:34AM
Brett, the regular control scheme is the one that involves the stick to deke and shoot. It's the same controls that are on NHL 09.
Brett from Atlanta @ Feb 10th 2009 10:55AM
Gotcha, thanks man.

The "regular" controls on this are not the NHL 09 ones. The skill stick controls are the NHL 09 ones. I don't think you can intermix the two, I tried last night and I didn't think it worked, but I could be wrong.
Strategy_Panda (Pot & Spoon 4 Life) @ Feb 10th 2009 2:18AM
what ever happened to big head mode as an unlockable gameplay option?
heyo007 @ Feb 10th 2009 8:17AM
It is now an option that is available as DLC, for you favorite sports themed game, and will now cost a nominal fee.
We've come a long way since those days. How's that for some progress. /sarcasm

This isn't OutRun Online Arcade...

Demo was really fun on PSN. I might get the full version eventually.
DBuck_Eye @ Feb 10th 2009 6:44AM
It looks good, but I don't think it looks Hitz good.
Chris Are @ Feb 10th 2009 12:32PM
That game was awesome! I miss that so much. -sigh-
mrpeatie @ Feb 10th 2009 9:28AM
Glad to hear the skill stick is a control option. It was one of the best features on the recent NHL games.
Anyone know if there are fights? Any word on avatars? Seems like the game was made for avatars. Curious to know why they wouldn't be implemented.
NoughtSoClever @ Feb 10th 2009 11:18AM
Well, it is multi-platform. Maybe they didn't think it was worth the payoff to only use Live Avatars and not Home (cause they aren't the right proportions). I agree that Live avatars would have been cool though.
butaneko @ Feb 10th 2009 11:14AM
I'm really not a fan of the big heads. I wish they would have tried cell shading or some other visual effect that made this look less like a crappy cheat code you would never bother entering into NHL 09 and more like it's own game.
However I am a big fan of arcade sports titles so I'm glad they made this.
Side note: If you haven't picked up NHL 09 it's really a lot of fun. It has actually made me into a hockey fan, where I didn't give a crap about the sport 2 months ago.
chris @ Feb 10th 2009 1:59PM
To anyone who has tried it:
Are the controls anything like the NHL '0X Games? I've played a lot of NHL 08 and 09, and if the controls are similar this could be a lot of fun.
