I.
After two hours walking
all uphill
sick as a dog
I finally got to see
what was at the end of a rainbow.
It was no pot of gold
but better still
a long steady gentle downhill
through a valley to the lake below
with a strong wind at my back
and a boat waiting to take me home.

II.
I missed the boat once when I was young and stupid,
but now I am able to miss the boat repeatedly with great skill and accuracy.

III.
You know you're in a small town when the cops use the prisoners in the local jail to supplement their team in the Sunday soccer game when they're shorthanded.

IV.
I who was given my big brain by mistake
cannot deny the foolishness
in the chances that I take
but for dumb luck I have survived
and moreover have even thrived
for I was built to laugh.
