Stimulus Plan: NSFW Edition
Members of the House and Senate are close to a deal on Obama's economic stimulus package, keeping the final number "lower to satisfy the three moderate Republican senators who wanted a lower final number," according to Political Ticker. Swamp Politics is pegging the final price tag at $789 billion. "It's basically whatever Obama wants," a House staffer said to Politico. The Senate bill is a half million jobs shorter than the House version, despite being $20 billion more, according to Think Progress. Liberal Oasis has a substantial stimulus bill round up , and The Center For American Progress notes that while the Senate version will stimulate the economy, "the House-passed version would do more." Meanwhile, Obama-supporting labor groups are playing hardball against the GOP leadership, calling them the party of "Just saying No," according to the Plum Line. Eric Cantor responded with a video of his own, characterizing the labor groups as foul-mouthed goons (via Glenn Thrush). At least John Boehner manages to respond to the ad without cursing like a sailor, says Ben Smith.
A-Rod, Steroids, and the Aftermath
Meet Alex Rodriguez: the latest member of baseball's Hall of Shame, blogs Al Nye the Lawyer Guy. With Sports Illustrated breaking a story that A-Rod used performance enhancing drugs, the superstar went on ESPN Monday and fessed up to using steroids from 2001 to 2003. "Didn't really surprise me," says The Corner. "These guys want what they want as badly as, say, Hillary Clinton wanted what she wanted." The question now, says Yankees blog Pinstripe Alley: "Do you believe he's still using? And if so, does that diminish your fandom of either him or the Yankees? Do you even care? " (About 60 percent in that poll think he's off the juice.) One ESPN writer says this has destroyed baseball's history. Geoff Baker at Mariners Blog agrees: "This might be the worst scandal in the history of sports." Hey, there are no winners here. Well...besides the quipsters. Says snarky Perez Hilton: Wonder if he's ever lied about anything else? Like his "friendly" relationship with Madonna?
