Details

Despite its former name (Lewisham Theatre) the Broadway Theatre is in the heart of Catford. Built as an adjunct to the Town Hall (a much extended and finally completely replaced building of 1875-1901) the public halls of 1932 were always multi-purpose rooms, the main hall becoming a recognised local centre for concerts etc. With the wanton destruction of Matcham’s magnificent Lewisham Hippodrome, within sight of the town hall, Catford gained a much-praised, but now rather dated, office block and lost one of the best theatres in South East London. The Broadway Theatre with its 102 seat Studio then assumed greater importance, the new name reflecting the fact that this is now the only working theatre in the borough apart from the Albany in Deptford. Architecturally, it has a little more presence in the town than many later civic centre theatres, but none of the landmark quality and none of the theatrical magic of the old Hippodrome.
