Iran And The West: Saddam offered to "eliminate" Ayatollah

Saddam Hussein offered to kill the Ayatollah Khomeini in the Autumn of 1978 before the Iranian Revolution that brought Khomeini to power.

Ardeshir Zahedi, Iran's then Ambassador to USA, says: "I was at the United Nations. Iraq's Foreign Minister brought us a message from Saddam. Saddam offered us a choice: He would expel Khomeini – or eliminate him."

Iraq's then leader Saddam Hussein was allowing Khomeini to live in Iraq and wage war against the Shah of Iran.

However, the Shah was cautious. His wife, Queen Farah, says: "In those days we thought that if somebody get rid of Khomeini he will become like a martyr and he become even greater."

The revelation is made for the first time in Iran And The West which will be shown on BBC Two starting tomorrow, Saturday 7 February 2009.

The three-part series marks the 30th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution.
