San Diego Comic Con 2007

Take 95 degree weather, 100,000 fans, Comics, Movie Premieres, Toys, Actors, Pirates and Storm troopers.

Toss all into the San Diego Convention Center and shake vigorously. Welcome to San Diego Comic Con!

The 38th Comic Con event has definitely come a long way from its beginning in 1970 with 300 attendees in the basement of the US Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. Fast forward to 2007 and it’s taken over the entire San Diego Downtown area and exceeds over 100,000 attendees. Huge doesn’t begin to describe it…it was massive!
Friday’s theme was Star Wars as they celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars saga. However, as compared to last year, the crowds were bigger but the Star Wars presence was much less represented probably due in part to the recent Star Wars Celebration IV in May of this year and the fact that everywhere and everything is “Jack Sparrow”.

The event featured exhibits from comic creators, game design companies, movie and television show promotions and toy stores. Speaking of toys, if anyone wanted the exclusive toys released by Hasbro, they were definitely in for a dual line wait: one line to just get a ticket to stand in another line later. Having already spent much of the con in ticket lines, food lines, and bathroom lines, I chose to pass on the exclusive toys.

The autograph area was packed with authors such as RA Salvatore (Forgotten Realms), Comic Creator Todd McFarlane (Spawn), Actors Michael Madsen (Kill Bill Vol.1 & 2, Reservoir Dogs) and Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica).

Television show and movie promotions were a huge presence at the con this year. Special premieres of “Stardust” and “Superman: Doomsday” as well as theatrical trailers from “Iron Man” and “Simpsons” were in full swing, with many movies hosted by lead actors.

Along artist alley, you’d find all genres of independent comics including Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade, the crew of Player Vs Player (PvP) Comics, and don’t forget the relatively unknown (yet up and coming!) Bob the Angry Flower. Seriously, his comics are funny!

As games (both console and pc) are breaking into the comic and movie industry, Comic Con wouldn’t be an event without a representation from Blizzard, Electronic Arts, NCSoft and Sierra touting their newest releases and upcoming expansion packs.

NCSoft, while having no information on the highly anticipated “Aion” MMORPG was proudly promoting Richard Garriot’s Tabula Rasa. This fast-paced action game combines skill, stealth and strategy with character grown and development to bring you a rich storyline with immersive environments. This new approach to the MMORPG genre is sure to blow you away. Currently in beta, Tabula Rasa is expected to hit the market this fall.

Blizzard was all about their new game “Starcraft II”. This game is shaping up to undoubtedly be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game. For “Starcraft” fans, they’ll be excited to see the new vibrant 3D-graphics engine and distinct new units to the Protoss, Terran and Zerg.

In addition, Battle.net will be overhauled with some new and exciting features to enhance online play and competition. Keep an eye out..this game is going to be hot! With so many different exhibitors and programs it was easy to feel that after a day (and miles of walking!) that I had seen it all, yet hadn’t even scratched the surface.

This must attend event for enthusiasts of comics, games, movies and collectables is definitely best experienced all four days. I know I plan on it next year!
