The sharply dressed young professionals smiled, sipped at their beers, and displayed the pink glow-in-the-dark wristbands that marked them as jobseekers. But the undercurrent at the Wall Street Pink Slip Party was decidedly glum.

Resources for older workers abound in troubled market
The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and so it goes with retirement in 2009. The brutal stock market decline and frozen real estate market have wrecked the retirement plans of many Americans, who now find themselves back in the job market looking for ways to supplement their income. The jobless rate among workers older than 65 was somewhat lower at 5.1 percent, but that number is higher than it has been in 31 years.
Job Searching in a Recession

Questioning health care deductions from severance pay
February 11, 2009
DEAR CARRIE: I was laid off last month and received one week of severance pay, for which I signed an agreement. In addition, the company's regional vice president told me health benefits would continue through the end of the month. When I received my severance pay, I noticed that my portion of my health care costs was deducted. The executive didn't tell me to expect that and I never considered it a possibility since I was laid off. Can companies legally deduct health care benefits from severance pay?
