Azerbaijan to send a duet to Eurovision

Azerbaijan announced the launch of their Eurovision Song Contest duet of AySel and the author of her song Always. In the second Semi-Final the young AySel will compete for the victory with the experienced songwriter and artist Arash by her side.

The decision to create the duet of AySel and Arash was taken by the seven-member jury of the Azerbaijani national final. It was heavily influenced by Arash’s own statements, he said he is not only a songwriter and composer, but also a successful singer, and that is why he would like “to be on the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest stage, and not just on its backstage.” This sincere acknowledgment of the author of Always gave the start to the duet from Azerbaijan.

“This idea came to us already at the first audition of Arash’s song,” said Farhad Hajiyev, one of the jury members. “His song is about love, beautiful and pure, and love is always about two people! When in an interview Arash expressed his desire to perform for Azerbaijan, we arrived at a firm decision that our country will be represented by this romantic duet - AySel and Arash. Moreover, Arash has some Azerbaijani roots, as you may know!”

The popular songwriter and singer makes no secret that he has long been interested in the Eurovision Song Contest. In addition, one of the decisive factors for him was the offer to sing in duet with AySel.

“Performing with AySel was important for me, since I wrote Always specifically for her,” said Arash.

Before announcing the duet, the Azerbaijani national jury made a somewhat unusual decision: to record Always, performed by AySel and Arash. It is the song, they believe, that is the most important factor for a good result, especially for the victory, at the contest.

“I was a little nervous,” said AySel after the recording. “Not about meeting Arash, just about the outcome of the recording. My worries proved to be groundless! We spent 48 hours in the studio, almost entirely; we changed and tweaked the song endlessly. The result of all our work you will hear very soon! What concerns Arash, I am impressed by his professionalism as well as his open and friendly personality and charm.”

The work on the song continues. The presentation of Always by the duet of AySel and Arash is scheduled for as early as the end of February. The Azerbaijani representatives are currently negotiating with some of the best European directors. The intention is to create not just a contest act but a true three-minute Eurovision show under the same name – Always.

According to Adil Kerimli, Head of the Azerbaijani Delegation, the work on the show is expected to begin by the end of this month, and its presentation will take place in mid-March in one of the European capitals.

@AzeriDee be jealous? You don't know me meng, what makes you feel that i'm jealous? Ah, some people can't stand the truth! The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable!

@boyoffun Dude, nobody is angry and feeling whatever you mean by your words.. its just not exactly what it supposed to be.. I guess only in 70 years of progress your country (and its people) they will be able to give their votes not because of neighborhood or friendship. (not only your country ofc., all that region and east europe either)

hope the Netherlands will get into the final. All three of them are great singers, even they are not the youngest anymore. But their performance is perfect. The song is indeed a classical Songcontest song, but who cares. What me bothers is that a lot of people are voting only for the looks from sexy men or voting for the girl with the biggest boobies!! Take for instance Greece last year 2008. That girl did not had any voice at all and it was a big shame for European voters for puting her on the second place. So people of Europe vote with your intelligence and not with... I hope you understand what I try to tell you!! Don't vote only for a sixpack and big boobies!! Vote ror originality and performance

alex91, if you have a problem with Azerbaijan, keep it out of this thread, okay? No one is interested to hear your Armenian bias. Go be jealous somewhere else.

As one of 30 million Azerbaijanis in Iran, I’d like to thank you very much Arash, to help Azerbaijan and Aysel and I can not wait to hear "Always"! At the same time, I’d like to thank the Azerbaijani Juri to give this chance to one of Azerbaijanis in Iran to participate in the Eurovision contest as an Azerbaijani.

We are the same people either living in Iran or Azerbaijan or anywhere else in the world. We are all Azerbaijanis.

Songs can be good but it is not important to win the contest. Diplomacy will win again.

In a recent interview, Arash confessed that "I would love to represent Azerbaijan on stage, not behind the stage, ... I participated in the open call because my family originally come from Azerbaijan. So I wanted to contribute to this country`s going down in Eurovision history."

I don't mind Arash getting involved with Aysel's performance, but I don't think it was a good idea to have him share the stage with her. With all due respect to her talent, Aysel is still a noob (even in her own country) for whom Eurovision is a chance to find her place under the sun, whereas Arash is already a successful world-recognised artist. Obviously he's going to steal the spotlight and make Aysel, the original rep, look more like a sidekick, like in the case with all other female singers with whom Arash has performed duets. Just sharing a thought, I hope I'm wrong...
