Love Bites: Stereogum's Anti-Valentine's Day Mix

thumbnail: Love Bites: Stereogum's Anti-Valentine's Day Mix

Valentine's Day is one of those holidays you might not pay too much attention to if you're in the midst of a really good relationship -- because every day is like Valentine's Day! -- but can gain importance in direct ratio to how shitty your love life is when February 14th rolls around. With that in mind, we're skipping the saccharine soundtracks in favor of a mix for those who need one. Because, really, if you're in love and you spend the night downloading MP3s from your laptop, well, you're not in love. We chose 13 recent tracks: 13 tracks for Friday the 13th. Even though it's Friday, maybe we all aren't in love.

Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest Album Art, Tracklist

thumbnail: Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest Album Art, Tracklist

So after finding out what the-album-that-somehow-comes-up-in-every-comment-thread was called, the only outstanding issue was: how exactly do you visually conceptualize a Veckatimest? I figure either you incorporate imagery of the namesake uninhabited isle, or create sort of a hand-drawn collage of various geometric shapes rendered in pastels and earth tones to capture the breadth of emotion and mood-spanning mystery conjured by the title's syllabic string. Oh I guess the latter.

New Papercuts - "Future Primitive"

thumbnail: New Papercuts - "Future Primitive"

Papercut Jason Quever's voice surprised me on "Future Primitive," a dreamy, psychedelic track from his forthcoming You Can Have What You Want. I'm familiar with, and have listened to, the San Francisco's songwriter's Mockingbird and Can't Go Back, but this is more classic and dusty seeming that I remembered. While still clearly pop, there's a hazy weight to it, like what you might find with the best autumnal Zombies (or maybe via a track by one of his Gnomonsong label's owners, Andy Cabic). The entire collection was capture via analog tape, which might have something to do with it, or it could be all the out-of-focus press photos he's taken. Whatever the case, "Future Primitive" is a good song that ends up in a good place: You feel like you've known it for ages, but are still just figuring it out.

New Here We Go Magic Video - "Tunnelvision"

thumbnail: New Here We Go Magic Video - "Tunnelvision"

After dropping on radars as a singular singer-songwriter type, Brooklyn's Luke Temple shifted course, scrubbing his name from the masthead for his next solo endeavor: Here We Go Magic. Cue internet praise. On this new project and its self-titled LP, the organizing principle is less Luke's alluring, wispy vocal androgyny and more patterns in sound, often repetitive folk-guitar figures buried in the fuzz of his 4-track, percussion, and analog synths. "Tunnelvision" is the first single, tapping all those points, and getting a video that is every bit as sketchily psychedelic and vaguely evocative as its source track. Peking and Snejina Latev direct.

The National Unveil New Songs, Line Up A Tour

thumbnail: The National Unveil New Songs, Line Up A Tour

The brothers and Berninger of the National told Billboard that a new album's in the works, slated for a 2010 release date. They didn't mention what it would sound like, but that's what the internet and your aural analytic ability is for. There are three post-Boxer bits to process: "So Far Around The Bend," featuring arrangement from indie rock's composer crush Nico Muhly, and these two tunes performed at Carnegie Hall's Free Tibet fundrasier last week. Both feature stately horns, "Karamazov" more balladic and "Saints" pushed by plinking pianos, and each reassure that the National remain interested in exploring their awesome ability to find a refined, subtle simmering point for their cathartic anthems, rather than push shit into the red like so many of the lesser bands they've outlasted, and outgrown.

New Peasant Video - "We're Good"

thumbnail: New Peasant Video - "We're Good"

Armed, for the most, with a guitar and his soaring, at times Elliott Smith-redolent voice, Doylestown, PA's Damien DeRose records under the moniker Peasant. His official "debut" full-length On The Ground came out at the end of January (he self-released another collection Fear Not, Distant Lover in 2005). If you haven't heard DeRose yet, take a look at the Chris Carey-directed video for "We're Good," where we find DeRose living with his lady in the middle of the woods and seeing the distance that's grown between them suddenly get filled by a big ol' bear. Point being: No, we're not good. It was shot in Savannah, GA at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Peter Gabriel Drops Out Of The Oscars The self-proclaimed "old fart" had agreed to perform his award-nominated Wall-E song "Down To Earth" until he was told he'd have to cut it to one-minute and fit into an Oscar-song medley. Songwriters "work bloody hard and deserve (a bigger part in the ceremony)," he stated. We respect his protest, but Videogum's liveblog will proceed as scheduled. Somebody needs to make all the Harvey Weinstein jokes. It may as well be us. (via Variety)
