10. The Fader's Top Seven Hotels Thanked By Axl Rose In The Chinese Democracy Liner Notes
7. Trump Hotel
6. Four Seasons
5. Ritz Hotel
4. The Palms
3. Hard Rock Hotel
2. Grand Hyatt all over the world
1. Mandarin Oriental in London
This one needed no commentary, so I've reprinted it in full, only pointing out that you should go to The Fader's Listmania 2008 to also read their Top Three Appearances by a Puppet in a Music Video. Though I will point out that the video of Kermit the Frog singing LCD Soundsystem's "New York, I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down" should be on there.
9. Howard Wolfson's Best Music of 2008
I hear people all the time say, "I just don't have time to discover new music." Well, the communications director for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign just put them all to shame. More surprising than his new employer (Fox News) is his penchant for indie rock. His new blog, Gotham Acme covers music and politics and lists some of our favorite blogs like My Old Kentucky Blog, brooklynvegan and largeheartedboy. And his "Best of" list includes my favorite album of 2008, For Emma, Forever Ago. Here are his Top 14 albums in no particular order. Visit Gotham Acme for his descriptions:
Alina Simon - Everyone is Calling Out to Me, Beware
Beach House - Devotion
Headless Heroes - The Silence of Love
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Bonnie Prince Billy - Is it the Sea?
Elephant Micah - Exiled Magicians
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Glasvegas - Glasvegas
Hayes and Cahill - Welcome Here Again
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis - Soundtrack to The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford
The Congregation - Congregation
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of Understatement
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
Wild Beasts - Limbo, Panto
He also gives a nod to Paste favorites The Everybodyfields and their 2007 album Nothing Is OK.
8. The Vulture's Complete Field Guide to the Facial Expressions of Keanu Reeves
New York magazine's entertainment blog has quickly become one of my favorite reads this year. Here they valiantly try to dispel the myth that the stone-faced actor can't emote. Reeves doesn't help their cause much in his latest turn as a stoic alien in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Watch the slideshow, and see Keanu roar.
7. Time Out Chicago's Worst Album Covers of 2008
It's hard to go wrong with a worst album covers list. First narrow down the long list of offending covers and then have a great time mocking them. Gigwise's list wins on volume, showing us 40 cringe-worthy covers. Pitchfork's deserves mention for linking James Taylor's cover to http://menwholooklikeoldlesbians.blogspot.com/. But we're going with Time Out Chicago for this zinger about Island's Arm's Way (pictured above): "Who shoved LSD into my ovary?"
6. Wired's Best Fictional Doomsday Devices
Kicking it off with a bang—Dr. Strangeglove's nuclear warhead-riding cowboy falling into oblivion—Wired looks at eight of the greatest world-ending inventions in fiction. It should be noted that at least a couple of the films that spawned these creations ended with everything blasted into dust.
1. The Doomsday Machine (Dr. Strangeglove)
2. Moonraker Space Station (Moonraker)
3. The Divine Bomb (Beneath the Planet of the Apes)
4. Project Destini (The Core)
5. Artificial Sun Fusion Reactor (Spider-Man 2)
6. The Death Star (Star Wars)
7. Spheroboom (Futurama)
8. Halo (Halo)
WHITNEY MATHESON IS YOUR OVERLORD!
BELIEVE IT!
Hilarious comment because it is true. I met her in person once -- frightening, powerful, awe inspiring. Submit now.
you'd think they (paste) would've gone to reasonable lengths to ensure their links went to the right location. Lego album covers goes to the Esquire best bar list. Classy!
My apologies. The link is now fixed.
The list of Howard Wolfson's favorite music is what really got me off. Being a huge political junkie as well as a music junkie I really appreciated that.
