Storm Watch

Lake-effect snow
Mark Avery, Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel

Lake-effect snows will continue to pile up this morning near the south end of Lake Michigan. Over a foot of snow has fallen in portions of northwestern Indiana, where lake-effect snow warnings continue. Snowfall amounts today will be heavily dependent on where the band sets up, with areas under the band picking up copious amounts of snow in a short amount of time, while areas only a few miles away outside the band picking up little if any snow.

As high pressure slips south and east today, winds will shift direction and the lake-effect snows will begin to taper off. Some snow off the lakes is possible in western Lower Michigan before the snow winds down.

Lake-effect snows are also falling over Upper Michigan off of Lake Superior and in northern Ohio. Even though Lake Erie is mostly ice-covered, winds are still crossing Lake Huron and bringing lake-effect snows downwind of it. Winds will shift direction later today and the lake-effect snows will taper off late today into the evening and overnight hours tonight.
