Description

READABLE BOOKS

*** Last Update 17th February 2009 ***

v1.04 - Fixed iOnceOnly section of PageEvents function. Fixed some typos that could mislead.

v1.03 - Made compatible with fontfamily.xml change with SoZ.

v1.02 - Made code compatible with companion use of books.

v1.01 - Made code more compatible for those who wish to mix books with a Table of Contents and pictures.

This module is based upon work previously done by clubok, which can also be found at the Vault: Link

MODULE DETAILS:

My version does not use or rely upon TLK or 2da edits. All text and page events are input and controlled through one script that must be updated as required by the builder. A full ten page PDF manual supplied with the module goes into more details.

Many of the features remain the same as clubok's original:

- Two pages viewable at any time
- Can turn pages forward and backward
- Create books with or without Table of Contents

I have introduced a few additions of my own:

- Table of Contents stays open and works with the same book now.
- Picture Books: View pictures within the books.
- Read Language Scroll magic item.
- Wizard/sorcerer spell book. (Personal requirement.)
- Multiple events per page and not just book.

A stunning display of how to utilize the UI. Hey and it's fun to use too!

Hi I_raps,

Thanks for the extra info ... and thanks again for letting me know. :)

I have checked the UI and it is OK. I am glad to heat the SoZ is now fixed. :)

I did not know there were issues related in the forums. If you see it mentioned, could you direct the affected people to my update/fix.

Thanks in advance.

Lance.

Hi Lance,

I downloaded the new version and everything seems to be working again - that is, SOZ is working again; I didn't try a mod that uses Readable Books, come to think of it, but I assume you've tested that out yourself.

FYI, in that picture I posted, the blank boxes were all supposed to have the names of various resources like mithral, adamantine, etc. In a strange coincidence, the four resources you can find in the first part of SOZ (in Samarach) were six letters or less, while all the resources found later (in the Sword Coast) were seven letters or more and six letters happened to be the break point for what would fit in the box with your fontfamily. So the problem was reported on the forums but was mistaken as a symptom of a different problem with the rare resources in the Sword Coast. After I installed the fix for that, the blank boxes were still there so I new there were two different issues... That led me to Link where you can see my own brainstorming laid bare.

Thanks again for the mod, and for your quick response.

Hi I_raps,

It was the fontfamily.xml. They altered the last two lines. So, thanks again for the heads up. Let me know if this osrts it OK, or if there is any more issues.

Thanks.

Lance.

Hi Again,

Not all of my post came out .... weird. I also said ... I will take a closer look at this and see if I can see where there are any changes and upload a compatible version.

Hi I_raps,

I checked out the image you linked to, but did not notice what was supposed to be wrong. :( I have not got that far yet. ;) I guess its to do with the font sizes, as that is the only UI that has been "offically" amended in any way.

Thanks for the heads up.

Lance.

Lance Botelle,

First off, I love this mod. I installed it along with the Halloween Mods package and it added a nice touch.

However - I want to let you know that this mod conflicts with Storm of Zehir in its present form. The xml files in the custom ui folder produce the problem seen here: Link

Maybe you should assign the mod to look in a specific sub-folder or something?

Hi MokahTGS,

Yes. :) It should be possible to have the GUI appear with a placeable book. However, this would most likely require some tweaking with the code to ensure the correct information is passed to the scripts. (I have not checked these scripts for some time as I have not needed to do anything more with them just yet.)

If I do end up doing something similar, I will most likely post information in my blog. If you see me post something, and are still looking for the information, then please leave a comment on the blog asking me to explain anything further if needed.

My blog is here: Link

All the best.

Lance.

Ok, I've actually gone another route, but thanks.

I'm wondering if there is a way to get the GUI come up just by using a placeable book?

Hi VoidHamlet,

Thanks for the vote. :)

Hi MokahTGS,

The function that adds journal entries is:

void PageEvents(object oPC, string sJournalID = "", int iState = 0, int iGold = 0, int iXP = 0, string sMonRef = "", int iOnceOnly = 1)
{}

And the manual says this on page 5:

"JOURNAL ENTRIES:string sJournalID will accept the Tag of a journal entry. This requires the next parameter (int iState) to also be added, so that the entry knows what state to place the journal in. Obviously, you will also need to add a journal entry with the appropriate state for this function to work. The journal Tag will be the same ID as the book that requires the journal entry. (That would be “althea2” in the above example.)"

And a working example is found in the script on page four that says:

PageEvents(oPC, sBookID, 2);

The sBookID refers to the tag of the book AND the journal tag entry - and then the figure 2 refers to the Entry ID.

Therefore, for your book that has an ID of "MyBook", then the Tag for the journal entry should also be "MyBook". Therefore, note, that if you have a journal entry around other code, you either need to change the book ID to match the journal entry you have used, or vice versa, match the journal entry tag to match the book ID.

I hope that helps.

Get back to me again if you still need more help. :)
Lance.

I do not understand how to make the Journal Entry events work with this. Can you give a more clear description for the scripting handicapped such as myself?

Friggin awesome, and should be mandatory for ANY games modules with books. Now with companion support I can give it a true 10 because it lacks nothing.

Thanks for your support and vote. :)

Ease of use without involving other utilities was one of my main goals. :) I'm glad it came across.

Hi Arvirago,

Thanks for the vote.

By the way, the books can be updated via a change in the HAK if you want to. It may not be as dynamic as using MySQL - I don't use that, I cannot comment. However, is does mean text can change between module loads without affecting saved games.

IN my PW I have adapted clubok's books so they read the title and content of the books from the MySQL database.
This way I can add or change contents from a book dinamically from the web.

Now I will try to check your improvements to update my version. Sure your work looks nice.

Hi clubok,

Your praise and vote are very much appreciated. :) As you say, without your own great contribution, this would never have been.

Thanks again, and keep coming out with great stuff.

Wow - you really took my work and ran with it. I am not ashamed to admit that this version is superior to mine. I am proud to have done the work that served as a precursor to this.

My hat's off to you!
