August 1, 2008 - Handheld gaming has been a mainstay of the videogame industry since the rise and subsequent conquer of the world's thumbs by the Nintendo Game Boy. Sure, there were other portable game systems before the Game Boy, but none equal that system's dominance. The various editions of the Game Boy -- normal, Pocket, Color -- have sold over 118 million units globally. The DS is well on its way to challenging the Game Boy's record with current sales hovering around 77 million units.

IGN Retro asked readers to vote for their favorite of the three handhelds on sale at the time of the Game Boy. Here are the results:

  • Game Boy: 80%
  • Game Gear: 14%
  • Atari Lynx: 6%

The Game Boy won handily, as expected. But I wasn't sure if the Lynx would eke out a victory over the Game Gear, as the Lynx enjoys a lot of retro love from a dedicated fanbase. However, it looks like the Game Gear pulled into second place on the backs of successful SEGA franchises like Sonic.
